“The ever-genial Clive Cox will saddle the exiting miler Yogi Bear for the biggest test of his career against Solow and Gleneagles in the Qipco Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes (Saturday October 17 2015) live CH4 .

KODI BEAR
Kodi Bear rips apart field to land Celebration Mile
Glorious Goodwood 2015 Saturday August 29.
“KODI BEAR bought for £62,000gns as a yearling, Kodi Bear is a son of Kodiac who carries the colours of Olive Shaw. Dennis her husband was my first major supporting owner and sadly passed away a couple of years ago, so this horse is very special. says Cox.

“Although Kodi Bear won just once in four starts as a juvenile, he ran a blinder in the Coventry Stakes, beat Muhaarar in a Ascot Listed race and was then runner-up in the Dewhurst. A Classic three-year-old campaign was planned until he got struck down with a serious infection that threatened to derail a highly promising career. He was training very well and we were very happy with him, then about two weeks before the Guineas he got an infection in the lymph drainage canal on the front of his leg. “ Cox explains. “Basically it was a very angry infection and put us back quite a few steps.

“Frankly for 48 hours we were all extremely concerned about his whole wellbeing, both with his temperature and the whole ferociousness of what was going on. It was very serious. “

“Cox has nothing but admiration for the way his stable star fought back from a debilitating setback “With all these good horses, forward motion is crucial and it did rock us all, “ he says. “But the whole constitution and the manner in which he came through it showed an enormous amount of courage. As an individual I've never been so proud of a horse as when he won first time back at Windsor in July, knowing what he’d been through and how he’d progressed. “

“After that comeback success at Windsor, not much went right for Kodi Bear when he was stepped straight back into Group 1 company for the Prix Jean Prat, where he came fourth. But he was to show his true colours a month later with a brilliant victory in the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury, where he looked right out of the top draw; more of the same followed one level higher at Goodwood in the Celebration Mile.

“He’s clearly shown his ability. “ says Cox. “He didn’t get a good passage through the Jean Prat but he had time for a regroup and then he showed a significant step up with the way he won at Salisbury in such a decisive manner. “That’s when people began to see what we’d been looking forward to seeing and he followed up with a similar effort when he won the Celebration Mile. Now we’re here at Champions Day with a good chance and it’s very exciting for us to be involved at this kind of level. “

"WHERE WINNING POST"
biography by Mickey Heaton- Ellis

CLIVE COX’S BLOODHORSE LITERATE  CAREER JOURNEY
CLIVE COX TRAINER OF YOGI BEAR.
“In my young days I wasn’t really thinking about the future, I just wanted to try and make a go of it as a jump jockey. But the Flat did always hold a strong attraction for me, and I used to ride out a lot for Mattie McCormack. I’m grateful I had a lot of opportunities to be round some very good people in my National Hunt days who hopefully taught me a thing or two going forward to where we are now. “
“He partnered Sacred Path, the heavily backed Grand National favourite in 1988? Well at that stage I was just hoping that I got a bit further than the first fence, ” he grins, recalling a disappointment that will doubtless provide the epitaph to his days in the saddle.  Sacred Path crumpled on landing and Cox’s big chance was taken away almost before it started. In those days I wasn’t really thinking about the future. I just wanted to try and make a go of it as a jump jockey. Adds Cox, 51. “

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Grand_National
“Clive Cox: A hugely popular figure within the racing community, Cox comes from a Somerset farming background and speaks with a rural burr. Renowned as a formidable grafter, he ended up holding a license almost by accident when his boss Mikey Heaton – Ellis died aged 41 in 1999 after suffering from motor neuron disease. Cox had spent nine happy years as Heaton – Ellis’s assistant at Barberry Castle without any thought of striking out on his own.
“I really don’t think that was ever my ambition, “Cox says. “It just sort of happened rather than us planning it. I did train on my own for a year with about 15 horses down in Wootton Bassett when I finished riding and we had three or four winners, but it was a struggle so we moved across and joined Mickey as assistant.
“We got on extremely well and I was very happy there – would’ve been quite happy staying there. I wouldn’t necessarily have looked to training independently on my own; if Mikey had lived longer I would have remained as his assistant but circumstances thrust it upon us and with him passing away it was a bit of a crossroads for me. So I wasn’t looking for it but I’m the sort of person who has to give 110 per cent once you’ve got your teeth into it.

“ Now Cox is thriving as a flat trainer, a solid Group-race regular with about 85 horses in his charge at Beechdown Farm Stables, the yard he rents from landlord (and work-rider) John Francome at the glorious top of the Lambourn Downs.

“If you’re after a quiet life there are easier options, but there’s nothing more rewarding than getting it right in this job and I’m extremely passionate about it. I get a real buzz out of seeing a good two –year-old; that’s why we get up in the morning. “
