NEWS

RODNEY MASTERS
"HUGHES faces month ban for foul - riding .....

"RICHARD HUGHES must forgo rides on favourites for both the Indian Derby and Oaks after being suspended for a month yesterday for Sunday's 'foul riding' incident when he elbowed another jockey.

"Richard Hannon's retained rider claimed he was acting in self defence in the 7f feature race at Mumbai but said yesterday that he had yet to decide whether to lodge an appeal to the Royal Western India Turf Club because he was aware of the "politics in racing in India".

"A popular rider with racegoers in Mumbai, where he has been a regular over many winters, Hughes is scheduled to begin his ban on January 22 which means he will miss nine race days.

"He said last night: "I was informed via the grapevine that I would receive a one-month ban and that's exactly what I've been given."

"He added: "I was told afterwards by the chairman of the stewards' panel that I should appeal and while that's an option, I haven't decided what to do.

"I was merely acting in self defence in the race, but one of the problems I face is that there's a lot of politics in racing in India."

"Hughes had been in trouble with the stewards earlier on Sunday for a minor incident for "failing to exercise proper control over his mount" which led to a fine of 3,000 rupees. (£36.00)

"The foul - riding incident came soon after the start of the feature race in which Hughes finished second on the subsequently disqualified STAR TRAINER. He was alleged to have elbowed jockey S ZERVAN who's mount ELIZABETH finished seventh.

"HUGHES said afterwards: "The other jockey tried to put me over the rails, so I was acting in self-defence.

"I was stuck on the rails; He kept on coming so I stuck my elbow out to stop myself going over the rails. I think he (The other rider) broke the rules."

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE REGULATION no matter in what country racing takes place, remains to be the cause of all such incidences as these. Jockey's should no better than 'tit for tat' mean riding, but in having to put up with shocking bloodhorse illiterate stewardship misunderstandings as these are not going to be solved over night.

"HUGHES had been in trouble with the stewards earlier on Sunday for a minor incident for "failing to exercise proper control over his mount" which led to a fine of 3,000 rupees. (£36.00)

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL NO rider can control a horse properly on the racetrack if such a horse is not being properly prepared at home each day. Unruly horses on the racetracks show that there are problems with the way these horses are being prepared and trained at home. If the same regulation as in Britain is being copied in India bloodhorse illiterate regulation will be the route cause of all such incidences as described here. The race-riders are blamed regardless because the stewards are bloodhorse illiterate and they know no better. Bloodhorse illiteracy spreading like a world wide cancer, tracing back to failed regulation not only on the racetracks, but ongoing within the licensing departments, the disciplinary departments, spreading like a world wide cancer, out of tune with the fantastic highly skilled achievements of the few at the top. What a legacy to leave for all the young ones just starting out now .... like leaving them to live with a mile stone round their necks. Very sad, and shockingly dangerous.

RPSUNDAY NEW YEAR DAY SUNDAY
 JANUARY 1st 2012
C4 NICK LUCK "The racing broadcaster of the year talks to STEVE DENNIS about Morning Line dumbing down, his ambitions outside sport, rocking the racing boat and 'that interview' with Paul Roy.

"This is different now. Nick Luck's natural habitat is on the other side of the microphone, the smooth and practiced host of countless broadcasts, if not the voice of racing then certainly one of its most familiar faces.

"I think that Paul Roy would agree that I didn't set out to make him look a fool."

LUCK ON THE BHA
"It simply doesn't have the power to take racing forward into a bright new era. Most of its meaningful influence have been devolved - racecourses now hold more of the cards and are much more commercially savvy than they used to be, bookmakers are much more strongly represented in Parliament than is racing, and the promotional and marketing aspects have gone to Racing for Change and REL.

"A lot has been written about how Paul Bittar is the great white hope, but his role doesn't have the scope for him to make a significant difference to the landscape of racing. Of course, he can be an extremely effective custodian of the constituent parts that the BHA still owns
- integrity, disciplinary, etc = and, most importantly of all, he can prevent himself from making a complete horlicks of it all.

"I'm not particularly pessimistic about the state of the sport, but its not fair to put so much pressure on one man simply because in titular terms he is the most important person in the sport, whereas in real term's he's not."

LUCK ON THE WHIP
"I was never in favour of the BHA wedding itself to a prescriptive number of whip strokes. That's saying that expertise and judgement are not sufficient to make a reasoned analysis of when a horse is being unreasonable asked for an effort with the whip.

"If you say that eight strokes is better than ten, you're also implying that five is better than eight and zero is better than five. If nine months has been spent undertaking a comprehensive review of the whip and the conclusion is that the whip is a legitimate part of a jockey's craft, why then say seven strokes is better than nine?
"What the BHA should be saying is that it's a legitimate tool when used appropriately, and when it isn't we have invested faith in specific people stewards - to mete out justice on a case - by - case basis. People will talk about inconsistency, but each case is different and must be approached with common sense. Ruby Walsh said 'you're trying to make something black and white that will forever be grey.' which is a superb way of describing the situation.
"Ultimately, whip bans will be reduced and the BHA will consider it a job well done, and most people will forget what a complete cock-up it was, but we should always remind people that its execution was pretty shambolic from both rule-drafting and PR perspectives."

LUCK ON DUTY
"Do racing professionals have a duty to promote racing? No - the idea of 'Duty' is a dreadful one. They should have an interest in doing so, but no obligation to do so. I think we can get
extremely self-righteous about the idea that we are one big family all pulling together for the common good. Yes, every one wants racing to succeed, but we can't impose values on people. All this 'for the good of the game' nonsense, I can't stand that phrase.

LUCK ON POST-RACE INTERVIEWS
"Some people have said the requirement to make oneself available for a post-race interview should be a contractual part of having a license, and I've always maintained that it shouldn't be.
"We have very good access to our professionals, much more so than in many other sports. If interviews were mandatory, you'd simply find people going through the motions more and more and it would defeat the object, it would just be 'great ride this ' and ' lovely horse that'  .

Speaking as an interviewer, it wouldn't allow you the chance to put your own spin on it.
Look - would forcing those from the more laconic end of the spectrum into a press conference make what they say any more interesting?  No."

RACING POST WEDNESDAY JANUARY 4th 2012 DRAMA IN INDIA FOR HUGHES

TODAY'S CARDS Huntingdon. Southwell. Lingfield Park. Kempton.

JAMES PUGH REPORTS  "DRAMA IN INDIA AS HUGHES IS ACCUSED OF ELBOWING ....
J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL
SUCH AN INCIDENT AS THIS MANIFESTING ITSELF through failed British regulation, letting the young ones down big time, over a lengthy period, until the young ones grow older and this sort of thing manifests itself. It could be said better the elbow than the whip stopping horses.

PAUL EACOTT "BOOKMAKERS reject bid by Cheltenham to grab slice of turnover ...
"Bookmakers have rebuffed an audacious advance by Cheltenham to grab a bigger slice from the multi-million-pound betting ring at the 2013 festival by charging on-course layers a percentage of turnover .....

"The abolution later this year of the long- standing 'five times rule', which means bookmakers pay five times the admission price to stand and bet, opens a new lucrative revenue source for tracks, and senior management at Cheltenham had hoped they could bargain for a percentage of the turnover in what is by far the busiest betting ring of the year.

"It is estimated at least £1 million changes hands on every race in the betting ring at the festival, frequented by more than 250 bookmakers - thus Cheltenham was angling for a percentage of £27m-plus.

"That proposal was rejected by bookmakers, but costs of betting at the meeting are still set to rise by more than 40 per cent next year. ......

The greedy bankers, the greedy bookmakers, the greedy government, the greedy racecourses, and the greedy regulators have left the heart of British horseracing haemorrhaging right left and centre over the last seven decades. Without a moments thought they have ignored the rights and the needs of the bloodhorse literate and the horses placed within  their care .

So before the rich racecourses attack the rich bookmakers for more money they need to settle their huge debt to the bloodhorse literate to include the horses. whom they have got away with ripping off over the last seven decades.

RACING POST TUESDAY JANUARY 3rd 2012

TODAY'S CARDS Ayr. Southwell. Christmas ratings review, page 4.

FOCUS ON 2012  A BIG YEAR FOR FALLON

STEVE DENNIS on what drives the tireless 46-year-old title chaser.

OUR WEEK-LONG SERIES CONTINUES with STEVE analysing why a 46-year-old would try to claim a seventh Flat jockeys' title.

"IT is a young man's game these days, which makes it all the more notable that one of the finest exponents of the modern art of race-riding will be 47 next month and seemingly as tireless as a man half his age."

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL
STEVE is right, it is a young man's game. A young person who wishes to try a career in horseracing needs to start long before leaving school. There are not many who have achieved what Kieren has achieved in his lifetime. Whether he succeeds in winning his seventh Flat title or not, he has throughout his lifetime to date already achieved a vast amount of experience along the way, he is among the elite few top professional handler riders who have ever walked on the face of this earth. He has not had an easy journey, baulked, abused and misunderstood by the bloodhorse illiterate.

Any one exploring, adventuring into the sport of horseracing world wide now, might well engage in a project to FOLLOW FALLEN throughout his 2012 Flat campaign.
