The
night before his death, Jesus engaged in a stunningly profound
Conversation
with his disciples. It is referred to as the High Priestly
Prayer,
and it covers several chapters of the Gospel of John, by far
the longest discourse of the Lord anywhere in
the New Testament.
We
read it throughout the Easter season at Mass.
In
the brief passage from today’s liturgy, the Lord says, I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for
you now. But when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete
truth. One of the most important features of
Christian
doctrine-recognized by thinkers from Vincent of Lerins to John Henry Newman-is that
it develops and unfolds over time. We must not think of the Church’s teaching
as a football simply passed on dumbly from generation to generation. Rather,
that develops and grows, remaining essentially itself, even as
it undergoes remarkable changes:
Newman
specified that the great ideas of Christianity don’t exist so much on the
printed page but precisely in the play of lively minds, one thinker turning
over a doctrine,
considering its many aspects, and then tossing that notion to
another thinker who
does the same before passing it on to the next generation.
