PREVIEW OF THIS AFTERNOONS RACING FROM YORK
“LEE WESTWARD, MICK EASTERBY  and CHUBBY CHANDLER are out to bring the house down at York this afternoon by winning the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.. So will you be ON THE HOOF?

“Best previews and tipping for day three of York’s Ebor festival  - and sizzling PRICEWISE takes on the big-race favourite with an 8-1 shot, plus other fancies at 11-1 and 14-1.”

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT DAVID CARR "On a trainer out to keep the Nunthorpe at home.
“AGE NO BARRIER WHEN IT COMES TO SPEED
“You don’t have to be young to win a test of speed –age is no barrier to going fast on foot, wheel or hoof. Linford  Christie was 32 when he won the 100m Olympic gold medal in 1992.

“Today, Mick Easterby, who turned 80 in the spring and has been in the business for more than half a century, is favourite to land the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes  - Britain’s top 5f event and in a race in which few of his rival trainers were even born when he first took out a license.

“Only a couple were old enough to be training when he last won it, with the remarkable LOCHNAGER, who was bought for just £600gns but was crowned champion sprinter after victory here  in 1976.

“Though the eyes may be a little older nowadays, they can still spot a bargain, as they did three autumns ago when picking out HOOF IT as a yearling at Doncaster for just £14,000 –
a drop in the ocean for part–owner  Lee Westwood, who earned $225,000 for finishing joint eighth in the USPGA  Championship in Georgia last weekend.

“It cost another £20,000 to add him to this afternoon’s field, but that still leaves the team well ahead of the game after winning eight races and over £160,000 in prize – money in the past three seasons.
“And few who saw the four- year- old destroy his rivals in last month’s Blue Square Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood  would regard the step up in class as a gamble- not judged on the way he defied a poor draw and top weight of 10st to take the summer’s hottest sprint handicap by an easy two and a half lengths.

“To put that into context for this afternoon, PATAVELLIEN won the same race off a BHA rating of 95 and BORDERLESS SCOTT 102, and each of the pair proved good enough to win in Group 1 company HOOF IT was rated 111.

“No wonder Kieren Fallon-on board for each of his last four wins –cannot contemplate defeat for the fast improving sprinter. Earlier this week, he told Racing Post Weekender readers: “It looks a cracking renewal but, no matter which way I look at it, I can only see one winner and that is my fellow.”

“He’d be a popular winner for the locals, a third in four years from the home county who guard their big sprints closely- each of the first ten home in last weekend’s  Great St Wilfred Handicap at Ripon were trained in Yorkshire. And for punters – he has been favourite since it became clear that this was his target. Mind you, following the market has not been a route to riches for anyone bar the bookmakers recently, with three winners in six years sent off at double – figure odds-and last year’s a remarkable three-figure price.

“But all eyes in Yorkshire this afternoon will be on the locally trained favourite to see whether he can bridge a 35-year for his remarkable trainer.”
