The importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ can be

seen in all the written Gospels; they are the combined target towards

which the drama of each Gospel moves. That is reflected in our principle

image of Jesus that has dominated Christian iconography is not the new

born child in Bethlehem or the teacher of authority or the performer of

mighty deeds; it is a dying man on a cross , the one who is rejected with

violence. This image has its own teaching; whoever you believe Jesus to be

depends on how you interpret his death.

In a sense none of us is complete until our death; the whole story cannot

be told about us until we have completed it. The same is true of Jesus. More

importantly; the death of Jesus is central to the understanding of who he is

As we can see from the development of early Christology, faith makes a journey

backwards with the light of the resurrection and reinterprets not only the past

of Jesus but also the past of the world:

The death and resurrection are not events added on to the ministry; they condition the whole telling of the story. The preached and the written Gospels do not lead up to the resurrection; they are born out of it. In the same sense the Gospel begins with “alleluia” because it is a proclamation of the continuing presence of Jesus in the community; that is why every verse can be called Good News. In the Church liturgical calendar it is Easter which makes for Christmas, not vice versa. The birth of Jesus becomes important because of Jesus death and resurrection.
