“THEY CAME IN THEIR DROVES TO YORK ON SATURDAY -
BUT WAS NEWMARKET A MEETING TOO FAR?”

JON LEES: “More than 40,000 people turned up to enjoy a day at the races at York on Saturday,  nearly four times more than attended the Group 1 July Cup fixture at Newmarket.”

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL
Looks like the July Course at Newmarket is not designed to accommodate
40,000 people …...

JON LEES “Chester hits out at July Cup switch. Newmarket’s controversial
decision to move the Darley July Cup raceday to a Saturday faced a further challenge yesterday when Chester chief executive Richard Thomas questioned  whether a crowd of  just over 10,000 for the fixture was vindication for putting it on the same day as his track , York and Ascot all raced …...
“While Chester, drew an attendance of 36,500, York 40,155 and Ascot 14,564 Newmarket reported the lowest crowd of Saturday’s feast of racing, attracting 10,736 for the first Saturday running of a championship sprint that had been staged on a weekday up to last year…..
“Citing a three-day crowd rise of eight per cent on last year, Newmarket managing director Stephen Wallis was yesterday standing by the decision to move the race to a day when it could attract a bigger world wide audience and said it was up to the sport as a whole to address concerns about the level of quality racing staged on any one day…..
“But Thomas, who had offered to move his meeting by a week in a fixture swap deal that was declined by Newmarket’s  owner, Jockey Club Racecourses, said, ”Newmarket’s move sounded barmy to start with, but if they had justified it by bringing an extra  20,000  or 30,000 people racing, then it was the right decision. But it didn’t did it? “

JON LEES “HORSEMAN'S GROUP TO LOOK INTO
BIG-RACE FIXTURE CLASHES."

“TRAINER’S concerns that too much quality racing is being pushed on to Saturdays are to be examined by the Horsemen’s Group new-race planning-committee – but any changes will be gradual rather than immediate.

“Champion Flat trainer Richard Hannon, Mark Johnson and Richard Fahey were among those who voiced anxiety at the problems they were experiencing trying to make running and riding plans for a Saturday that featured afternoon fixtures at Ascot, Chester, Newmarket and York, plus evening meetings at Hamilton and Salisbury.

“It will certainly be on the agenda,” said HG chief executive Alan Morecombe.

“Hannon went to Ascot, then to Salisbury in the evening, while his son Richard jnr supervised runners at Newmarket.

“I got home nice and tired,” said Hannon snr, “I was pleased to see my bed last night . It is tough when you start at five in the morning. If you keep looking at the fixtures you will find that everything is being moved into the weekend.

“It’s giving us a very hard time; there is no doubt about it. You have got only so many horseboxes, so many head lads and so many people who can go racing.”

“The trend is also a concern for William Haggas and Ralph Beckett, who pointed out yesterday that a clash would have been avoided had the July Cup been moved to Sunday.

“We all understand why they want to race on Saturday, but there needs to be some balance,” said Beckett. “Yesterday was in nobody’s interest really. I can’t believe Newmarket would have had a smaller crowd today (Sunday)”

“Haggas, who landed the John Smith’s Cup at York, said “I am going to write to (managing director) Stephen Wallis when the dust settles to see what he thinks because Newmarket is the track that has upset the applecart.

“We will get more and more of this, because the big racecourses will say this is what we want to do and we’re going to do it. I think it takes the shine off York.”

“Haggas added ‘All of us, though, want the racecourses to be profitable and put on the best races possible . Presumably they know what they are doing.

Was it a gamble worth taking? Newmarket still have to decide.”

ALASTAIR DOWN  “The world’s most famous jockey on his enduring passion for the sport and his concerns for his fellow riders in a special Alastair Down interview.

FRANKIE DETTORI EXCLUSIVE “WE’VE GONE TO FAR ….
‘We had a beautiful tradition of spreading the big races out through the week. Now everyone can only think of one day and we are far too centred on Saturday.’
“I have 850 winners for Godolphin and reaching  1,000 is an important target.
“In the four years I was with John Gosden I would meet Sheikh Mohammed from time to time but it was after Godolphin started and they flew me out to ride BALANCHINE that I began to know him better. At heart he is a man who really loves his horses and 17 years on I’m still with him.

“Of course he is very competitive but of all the people I know in racing he is the best looser I have ever met he knows how to deal with it. We don’t see him as much as we used to because his responsibilities are huge but he is just as intensely involved with the training and still knows every result and what the horses are doing.

“His face when we won with BLUE BUNTING was priceless and what he’s  done for racing  is priceless too."

ALASTAIR  “Dettori has a burgeoning business empire and is easy in the company of fellow celebrities but it is when he talks about horses that he comes alive and the performer gives way to the inner professional.

“FRANKIE says: ’I still love riding them because they still fascinate me, you have to be a horse- whisperer and get inside their brains. They don’t open the Post in the morning and go ‘hey, I’m over a mile today’- they need your guidance and they will respect that guidance if you have a genuine rapport with them. We are almost psychiatrists specialising in horses. Every horse is different and we have to make them collaborate with us in order to win because if you get in a fight with them you can’t win."

ALASTAIR “Having picked up a ban for in effect not trying hard enough to finish third in the Oaks, Frankie subsequently fell foul of the Ascot stewards for trying too hard when powering REWILDING home to chin SO YOU THINK in the Prince of Wales Stakes that had acquired the status of an epic even before the sweat was dry on the combatants.

ALASTAIR,  he says: “They spent years trying to create a whip that doesn’t hurt horses and they succeeded. – its hollow and made of foam. We have to educate people to the fact that it simply does not hurt them ....

FRANKIE “I know there is some talk in jump racing of not using the whip after the last but Flat racing is different. We are taking huge valuations of future stallions in a multi- billion- pound- industry. What would have happened if I had got beat on REWILDING and come back and said, Sir, if I’d given him one more I would have won?”

ALASTAIR, “Of course this doesn’t address the fact that top horses will still be worth sums untold if they win without being hit with the stick, but Frankie is adamant that the modern whip is light years ahead of the more savage instruments of old.

Tomorrow Dettori will be part of the Channel 4 team at the July meeting and television is something that he hopes will make up part of his life when his life is no longer riding ....
.

GRAHAM DENCH “HANNON HITS OUT AT SATURDAY ‘SHAMBLES’ .
“Champion trainer Richard Hannon has hit out at the ‘Shambolic’ fixture clash that follows the repositioning of Newmarket’s July Cup card on Saturday alongside John Smith’s Cup day at York and good cards at both Ascot and Chester as well as evening meetings at Hamilton and Salisbury.

HANNON  “With six meetings on Friday, too, trainers, jockey’s, agents and  owners all have headaches making plans for the weekend. Hannon said: “Trainers aren’t happy and nor are the jockeys, who can’t cut themselves in two, so whichever bright spark came up with the idea to change things round should be handed the dunce cap and told to stand in the corner of the room.”

DENCH “Hannon is by no means alone in his criticism of the clash, which has been created by Newmarket’s determination to have the Darley July Cup run on a Saturday, an ambition first expressed publically two years ago ………
TODAYS MEETINGS ARE: Bath, Catterick, Lingfield, Kempton, Worcester and Naas.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT  SATURDAY AT SANDOWN

Dato Tan, Chin Nam and Ahmad bin Tunky Yahaya.
Breeder Mike Moran and Piper Farm Ltd.  Prize money winner£266,840
SECOND: WORKFORCE 4 9-7 partner RYAN MOORE trainer Sir Michael Stoute. Distance half a length.Prize money second £86,000
Prize Money between the winner and the second is £180,840

WEDNESDAY JUNE 15th 2011 ROYAL ASCOT TURF
A Qipco British Champion Series Race (Group 1)
The Prince of Wales ‘s Stakes 1m2f . level weights, 7 runners 4yo up.
Win: £227,080 – Second £86,080
WIN: REWILDING 4 9-0 partner FRANKIE DETTORI trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni for Godolphin. Prize money winner: £227,080

SECOND: SO YOU THINK 5 9-0 partner RYAN MOORE distance neck
Prize money for second place £86,080
Prize Money between the winner and the second is £141, 000
The interesting scenario here is that RYAN MOORE who partnered SO YOU THINK at Royal Ascot to finish second, without using his whip to access, according to the stewards, beaten a neck by REWILDING partnered by FRANKIE DETTORI who was allowed to keep the race, even though he received a 9 day whip ban. What sort of justice is this?

Where the stewards right at Royal Ascot this day, in allowing Frankie Dettori partnering REWILDING to keep this race? Due to the fact they saw fit to give him a 9 day ban for excessive use of the whip?

British horseracing rules, can never be geared to only suit the punters, because as in all sport the rules are there to ensure fair play. In horseracing the rules have to take into consideration all the horses needs and rights as well. All sportsmen and women no matter what sport they compete have to play by the rules, as we see at the recent Wimbledon Tennis Tournament 2011, where a racquet and ball are needed, not a horse, and a specifically set out court on which tennis is played by the tennis rules.

Horseracing can learn a lot from the way tennis and golf are played, their regulation and ruling adept to uphold the rights and needs and to bring along the young ones in a fair and reasonable way. Unlike horseracing which still today remains a lottery with Stable Staff all bunged in together as of no account …. Just how dreadfully wrong is this?
The Grand National 2011 finish was very similar …. The horse that past the post first under severe whipping was so exhausted he couldn’t make it to the winners enclosure. Whoever wants to see this sort of thing?

The British Horseracing Authority Regulation pattern of stewarding emerging now, time after time, after time surely these BHA people need to consider the confusing message they are sending out world wide each and every day?

What message is this sending out to true professional senior handler riders?
What message is this sending out to junior handler riders attempting to achieve bloodhorse literacy ?
What message is this sending out to all learner handler riders attempting to achieve bloodhorse literacy?
What message is this sending out to horseracing around the world?

*Every licensed rider leaving the weighing room going out to ride in any race need to be reminded that if they flaunt the whip rules at any time during any race they will be placed last, not first.

**Every rider leaving the weighing room going out to ride in any race need to be reminded that if they flaunt the many different interference rules stopping other competitors in any way at all, at any time during any race they will be placed last, not first.

British horseracing rules, can never be geared to only suit the punters, because as in all sport the rules are there to ensure fair play. In horseracing the rules have to take into consideration all the horses needs and rights as well. “As the only other jockey to have ridden SO YOU THINK in a race since his arrival  from Australia , HEFFERNAN was a strong contender to take over from RYAN MOORE, who is committed to partnering last years Derby and  and Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe winner WORKFORCE.

That’s around 10,000 sales and we are anticipating around 15,000 here on Saturday. This year’s outstanding line-up has definitely had a positive impact.

JON LEES “SHOPS HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY IN MOBILE AGE - LAYERS
High street bookmakers believe betting shops will continue to hold their own as outlets where punters can place a bet, despite the explosion in betting through mobile devices like tablets or smart phones from which they are reaping substantial  benefits .

“Since introducing a betting application (app) for iPhone, iPad and Android in January this year Paddy Power has seen the number of mobile users increase from 50,000 to 120,000 a figure that stood at 10,000 in January 2010.

“The bookmakers were responding to a special report in yesterday’s Racing Post that examined how racecourses and on-course  bookmakers were reacting to the rapid advance of modern technology.

“When telephone betting came about everybody said it would be the death knell of the shops. It was the same when online betting came about and this is the game changer in the industry now, smart phone betting.” said Paddy Power yesterday.

“The reality is we’ve seen huge growth in mobile betting but at the same time we are expanding the number of shops we have, particularly in the UK, pretty rapidly as well.

“I think it goes hand in hand . Its convenience will suit some but a lot of people go to shops because they like getting cash in hand, they like the atmosphere. There are a lot of reasons for going to a shop and having a hand -held devise wouldn’t be one of them.

“We intend growing aggressively through technology and traditional betting methods as well.  Technology has impacted in betting shops too where there is more on offer now.”

“Hills head of online PR Tony Kenny “We are pushing  out technology to get new people and different kinds of punters. It’s a different way of betting.
“Mobile betting has gone up by 800 per cent year on year, its now five per cent of our online  turnover and we see that increasing even more in the next few years. It’s a growing trend and the way technology is going its going to get more advanced. In terms of of the way
bookmakers are acting we are all in a technological race to keep on top of all the different developments .”
Channel 4 Horseracing Team,  John (Greatest Jockey) Francome recently spoke up on the Morning Line saying that the betting shops are key to betting throughout this country.

‘A great day’ for McCoy’s at Buckingham Palace with pic Edward Whitaker of Tony McCoy,
wife Channelle and daughter Eve proudly displaying the multiple champion jockey’s OBE.
“SIXTEEN-TIME champion jockey Tony McCoy yesterday enjoyed a ‘great day ‘ as he
collected his OBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace, accompanied by his wife
Channelle and daughter Eve.

“McCoy, the reigning BBC Sports Personality of the Year following his victory in last year’s John Smith’s Grand National, said ‘It is a privilege to be honoured with an OBE. I couldn’t have done it without the great support of so many owners and trainers over the years . Channelle and Eve both came too and we all had a great day.

“The Queen’s passion for horseracing gave McCoy an obvious connection when collecting his award and the winning most jump jockey told the reporters at the Palace; ‘We spoke a little about how many times I have been champion jockey and mentioned her horse Carlton House.

“She’s pretty knowledgeable on her racing, so it made it quite easy for me. I was never going to be stuck for something to talk about with her.”

JOHN RANDALL looks back at the celebrated history of the Eclipse Stakes.
“Sandown feature created splash as world’s richest race.”
“The Eclipse Stakes is 125 years old this week and retains much of the prestige it had when starting out as the world’s richest race.

“The inaugural running in 1886, won by BENDIGO, was the sports first £10,000 race, and Sandown’s signature event has regularly staged the first major clash between Classic horses and their elders.
“The man most responsible for the new race was Hwfa Williams , one of Sandown’s founders and for many years its clerk of the course and chairman.
“After the impresario’s death in 1926 one obituary stated :”It was Mr Williams who started the racing community by promoting the Eclipse Stakes, the first guaranteed £10,000 races. In matters relating to the Turf  he was, indeed, a courageous pioneer.”

How can the British Horseracing Authority Regulators possibly say that they are happy about the situation that they have placed RICHARD HUGHES in? And not only  HUGHES, but Licensed Trainer Richard Hannon Senior?  Richard Hannon Junior ? GRAHAM LEE (born 16 December 1975 in Galway, Ireland)[1] is a successful Irish National Hunt jockey in Great Britain and Ireland. Prior to May 2006, he was the main stable jockey for Howard Johnson,[1] but was replaced by Paddy Brennan, allegedly after a disagreement over his return from an injury. Lee became the main stable jockey and deputy trainer for Ferdy Murphy.[2] In 2008 Lee attained the feat of being only the fourth National Hunt jockey to be placed in the first two positions in the National Hunt Jockey's Championship in ten years[1] (following Robert Thornton, Richard Johnson and Timmy Murphy), at the time displacing Richard Johnson. In 2009, Lee began riding for newly licensed trainer Rose Dobbin, wife of jockey Tony Dobbin, in addition to his work for Murphy.[1]

THE RACING POST SATURDAY JUNE 25th 2011
"HUGHES HEARTACHE .......

RICHARD HUGHES IN THE POST ON SATURDAY’S. DON’T MISS IT.
The predicament that RICHARD HUGHES finds himself to be in according to the present BRITISH HORSERACING AUTHORITY (BHA) totting up procedures. And what he has to say about it himself, from his riding point of view as a top bloodhorse literate horseman.

THE TWO KEY ISSUES CAUSING CONFUSION AT PRESENT ARE :
A) THE USE OF THE WHIP
THE WHIP is a punishment tool, can be used as a pending warning tool.
A hurry up message to the horse of what is immediately needed.

B) INTERFERANCE AND THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INTERFERANCE

LEE MOTTERSHEAD WRITES

"British Horseracing Authority (BHA) rejects  HOOD’S criticism over costs of London office

“The BHA has made clear it has ‘no plans whatsoever’ to relocate its offices from central London despite accusations from the Racehorse Owner’ Association new president RACHEL HOOD that the cost to racing’s governing body remains ‘shockingly expensive’ .

“HOOD, speaking at the annual of the ROA held in the capital’s Jumeirah  Carlton Tower Hotel on Thursday, was critical of the BHA when responding to a question from Geoffrey Bishop, who described  the BHA as ‘out of control and inefficient ‘ adding: The cost of the BHA is appalling. The head office should be in Newmarket. Why are we paying London rates for staff?”

“HOOD, who presides over an organisation that is based in the same London offices as the BHA, agreed with Bishop and said: “The ROA has embarked with the BHA in attempting to deal with the shockingly expensive cost of the BHA, around £30 million per annum.

“I agree that the BHA should not be in London paying London rates. I am determined that the BHA restructure should happen as quickly as it can. The situation is untenable and unacceptable .”

“In response, BHA head of communications Paul Struthers, argued that the BHA has reduced both its budget and head count by 20 per cent since 2007, a move that some of its hierarchy believe represents a far greater cost cutting exercise than anything carried out by the ROA or other major racing bodies.

“Struthers said: “There are obvious benefits to being based in London and we have no plans whatsoever to move out. Calls for us to relocate take no account of current commercial realities, the benefits of a shared central office nor the potentially huge cost of relocation.

“The issue of relocation is trivial when compared to the urgent need for racecourses and horsemen to organise themselves to ensure the proposed industry restructure happens within the shortest possible timeframe .

“Such a restructure is crucial for racing to move forward and will allow for efficiencies to be made across the board, not just at BHA.”

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL.
BLOODHORSE ILLITERACY within the present BHA Regulation, Disciplinary, and Licensing departments to be culled out for once and for all time.  Never again can we allow such people to make such a mess up within this specific area of this most wonderful sport.

NEWMARKET THE HOME AND HEART OF BRITISH HORSERACING is the obvious place to have the New Bloodhorse Literate Regulation, Disciplinary and Licensing base.

NEWS FROM THE ROA AGM.
"NEW OWNERS' LEADER HOOD URGES RADICAL  FIXTURE REFORM
HOWARD WRIGHT brings us news: “HOOD urges tariff-free fixtures for bottom rung.”

“RACHEL HOOD, new president of the Racehorse Owners’ Association, yesterday
called for a three-tier fixture list that would allow bottom-rung meetings to float free of Levy Board support and any prize money conditions.
“Conceding the plan required much refining,  HOOD speaking in her maiden address
to the ROA’s  annual meeting in London, described it as a radical way of ‘imposing a truly aspirational structure on British horseracing”.
“Premier and middle-tier fixtures would comply with Horsemen’s Group tariff values and race-planning requirements, under-pinned by contractual agreements  between the HG and racecourses she explained.
“There would be a prescribed number of fixtures in each category and racecourses  would be required to bid for these on the basis of how much prize-money they were offering, ” She added.”
“Only racing festivals and the major jumps fixtures on Saturdays would be protected.”
“The proposal first surfaced in October 2009, in the form of a ‘broad-brush’ produced paper by ROA chief executive Michael Harris as an idea to be pursued  by the fledging Horseman’s Group …..

“ROY ON THE WAR PATH … IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A SCAPEGOAT
DON’T LOOK AT ME.”
Chairman PAUL ROY comes out fighting in a forthright interview with HOWARD WRIGHT …

“ROY places blame for racing’s troubles squarely at feet of ‘a Levy Board with no balls.’
ROY GOES ON  “CRISIS? What crisis? Administrators in all guises, from governments to sporting bodies, have hidden behind that pairing of rhetorical questions when others on the outside have sought answers to serious and usually damning queries about wellbeing.

“BHA chairman Paul Roy teeters on the brink of using the same sequence of words to counter criticism of his position and the perception that racing’s governing body is loosing out on all sides, before he makes an admission …

“There is a crisis, he says but it is not of the BHA’s. making, the fault lies with the Levy Board – and the solution rests with the government.

“There is only one crisis, Roy explains “and it‘s the funding gap, £50 million per annum, the difference between around £110m in Levy three or four years ago and what we are getting now. It was averaging around £90m for a fair run, but its fallen off a cliff.

“Why wasn’t that addressed ten years ago, five years ago? That’s where it’d come from, through changes in the dynamics of the betting market that were not identified. Who’s  responsibility was that?”
“ROY rules out pointing the finger of fault at racing’s direct interests and quickly provides his answer; “A Levy Board with no balls.”

“He says: ‘The Levy Board was scared to death because bookmakers were going to move off shore. And what did the bookmakers do?  They moved off shore.

“The Levy Board was petrified every time the exchanges, through Betfair, reared their head and generally threatened legal action, and the board backed off.

BANNED HUGHES to miss July meeting, BRUCE JACKSON reports:
“RICHARD HUGHES has been ruled out of the three day Newmarket July meeting
for careless riding after an incident  in the  1m+ maiden at Windsor on Monday evening (June 20th)
His mount PUTTING ON THE STYLE clipped heels with MRS DEE BEE, who was squeezed out just before the furlong marker and hampered before falling.
“The stewards exonerated HUGHES of dangerous riding but found that he had caused ‘considerable interference ‘under the careless riding code and suspended him for seven days, which rules him out of Newmarket’s  mid summer showpiece on July  7, 8 and 9, including the Group 1 July Cup and Falmouth Stakes which he won last year on Music Show.

“Stewards’ secretary TERENCE  BRENNAN explained: We  consider it was not dangerous but was careless  and caused considerable  interference , for which the suspension band is five to nine days-and the stewards elected for seven . HUGHES is already banned on July 4 so his suspension covers July 5-9 and 11-12 as there is no Flat racing on Sunday, July 10. "

Allowing your ride to clip heals with another competitor is one of the most dangerous things a rider can let to happen, riding as this can cause maximum carnage.  In this case MRS DEE BEE not only got her heels clipped which would have caused her considerable pain,  she was knocked out of her place and out of her stride and was bought down. A FOAL and a year later a YEARLING, as this filly BORN TO RUN became on January 1st 2011. (the official birthday given to all thoroughbreds bred for racing) As is the case in this true story …..

IF HANDLED PROPERLY from birth BORN TO RUN should not be experiencing any shocks to her system. She will be travelling to Doncaster next month to the sales, and will meet up with many new experiences throughout these procedures. Much will depend upon the handler, minder who shares these experiences with her, and brings her along, or otherwise as the case may be. Monty Roberts prefers to call this learning curve ‘bringing along the babies,’ instead of ‘breaking in the yearlings’ and rightly so.

ON NO ACCOUNT should a young filly as this, be forced through cruelty to become broken spirited, to have all her confidence broken through cruelty leading to a total loss of confidence. It is then when an equine can become the most dangerous, left to fight for his or her own rights,  alone.

BORN TO RUN has much to learn from now on as a yearling, ongoing throughout to
January 1st 2012, when she will officially becoming a two year old, and on throughout her two year old life. Much will depend upon who purchases her, their knowledge and expertise vital to her wellbeing.
