RACING POST WEEK MONDAY JUNE 6 TO SUNDAY JUNE 12 2011

RACING POST MONDAY JUNE 6
"THE MONDAY JURY. Our experts give their verdicts on the burning issues arising from
the red-hot weekend of Classic action at home and abroad ....
"BETFRED refuse to pay out online bets in Curley coup. Winning punters owed  £823,000 seek legal review. DAVID ASHFORTH writes "BETFRED.COM, based in Gibraltar, will not pay out on the bets placed by Barney Curley's relatives as part of the Newmarket trainer's £4 million coup last May.

"This comes despite the fact that Betfred's UK betting shops have paid out and that, following an investigation, the BHA concluded that no rules of racing had been breached. Betfred who on Friday were declared the new owners of the TOTE, declined to comment, stating: "It is with our lawyers."

"Last Wednesday, (June 1) Betfred.com's lawyers informed the five account holders, four of whom are related to Curley, that bets showing a profit of more than £823,000 would be voided under the company's rule 10, which states: 'Any person or group of persons acting in an attempt to defraud Betfred.com will have there bets voided.'

"The decision followed a letter dated May 27 from the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority which accused Curley of deception, the account holders of fraud, and the BHA of misapplying  its own rules.

"Andrew Montague, a Northern Ireland -based solicitor acting for the claimants, said 'We have already instructed our Gibraltar agents, Triay and Triay lawyers, to proceed with an application to the Supreme Court of Gibraltar for a judicial review of the GRA's handling of the case, which has been inter alia, ultra vires, unlawful, irrational and proceedurally and
substansively unfair .....

"The case, which has soured relations between the BHA and GRA has wider ramifications
because it demonstrates that UK-based punters betting with offshore bookmakers may find their bets are treated differently ....  Its a frightening senario where major players in a billion pound industry can be regulated by an organisation with such misconceived ideas about the rules of racing. Betfred have hidden behind this offshore veil ....

" On the legal wrangling sparked by the Barney Curley coup. "An email said a cheque for £500,000 would be dispatched in a couple of days. The cheque was never sent. .....

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL
How right is wrong? And how wrong is right? How can the BHA possibly be allowed to continue on regulating British horseracing whilst it remains to be inside out and back to front all at the same time? Bloodhorse illiteracy at its most dangerous, and PAUL ROY is bloodhorse illiterate, as was NIC COWARD.

BETFRED.COM appear to have roared in like a lion, with the full bloodhorse illiteracy of government backing.

"BORN TO RUN We catch up with the latest arrival in our facinating series following the life of a racehorse ....

"RELIABLE MAN and MOSSE hit heights.
SCOTT BURTON writes "FOR Alain de Royer-Dupre, Sunday delivered what Saturday
didn't, with RELIABLE MAN capturing the Prix du Jockey Club as Ballydoyle's Irish 2,000 Guineas winner RODERIC O'CONNOR could manage only eighth."

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL
JOSEPH O'BRIEN partnered RODERIC O'CONNOR to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas. But got jocked off   RODERIC O'CONNOR  in the French Derby. Therein could well be the answer as to this colts lack luster performance in the French Derby. Joseph knows  RODERIC O'CONNOR well. So why was he jocked off? How does the saying go? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it ?"

The partnership between JOSEPH O'BRIEN and RODERIC O'CONNOR was shown to be a sound one in winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas, it could be noted an excellent performance without a shadow of doubt. Lets hope we get to see these two back competing on the racetrack again soon.

RACING POST TUESDAY JUNE 7
ROYAL ASCOT HOW IT ALL BEGAN. Racing historian JOHN RANDALL charts how the big meeting has evolved - from a private gathering for Queen Anne and her courtiers in 1711 to the present day's feast -

MOORE THE MERRIER by ANDREW SCUTTS "He was down in the dumps after the Derby, but bookies expected Ryan to perk up at Royal Ascot as they make him odds -on for top jockey."

"RYAN MOORE may not have enjoyed the weekend to remember he was hoping for, but bookmakers are convinced the three - time champion jockey will again be top dog at Royal Ascot.

"Moore, who was third on the Queen's CARLTON HOUSE in the Investic Derby at Epsom -where he was irked by having to run wide because of 'rubbish' horses in the race - and eighth on Coolmore's RODERIC O'CONNOR in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, was yesterday  installed odds-on by BET365, Paddy Power and William Hill to retain the top- jockey crown at the royal meeting ....

JOHNNY WARD  writes "HANNON eyes Royal Ascot with classy Naas winner. LILBOURNE LAD  (two year old b colt) impresses as Hannon raid pays off.

RACING POST WEDNESDAY JUNE 8
"I couldn't have scripted a better way to start and I'll be eternally grateful for that."
"He's hit the ground running after taking over from training legend Michael Jarvis.
Roger Varian talks to Peter Thomas.

PETER THOMAS "Little has changed at Kremlin House since Roger Varian took over from his old boss Michael Jarvis.

ROGER VARIAN "I want to get to the top, but in a pleasant way, the way Michael did it."

GAY JARVIS "We always had a feeling about Roger. He's been like a son to us."

ROGER VARIAN "I'll take a small team to Royal Ascot but they'd all go there with chances."
PETER writes "With his sleek-but-studious Armani glasses and his sparce, enigmatic smile, Roger Varian has always reminded me a little of someone. At first I thought it might be the
Mona Lisa after a visit to Specsavers , but now, as he takes me gently through his slow-burning ambitions for next week and the years beyond, his mobile phone flitting from pocket to ear, it dawns on me: here, in the heart of Newmarket, is Oxfordshire's answer to Aiden O'Brien.

"I'm sure when I next run into him on Warren Hill, the straight ahead 32- year- old with the neat, functional hair cut and the occasional Twitter habit will have a quiet word, pointing out that his present 27 per cent strike-rate is no gaurantee of multiple Classic success in the future, and that he wouldn't want anyone to think he's getting ahead of himself.

"He'd be right, of course. He's no Aiden O'Brien. If he's anything other than his own man, Varian  is Kremlin House Stables' answer to Michael Jarvis, his gov'nor of 14 years who handed over the license to him at the start of the season. Although Jarvis would almost certainly think 'tweeting' is strictly for the birds, similarities between the two run unsurprisingly deep and broad, from the undemonstrative manner to the well-mannered demeanour, from the fleeting humour to the barely detectable steel that underpins the even, imperturbable temperament. Jarvis, for all his niceness , didn't last for 43 years in training business, racking up Group 1s by the trilby hatful, by lacking in ambition or application. What he did was meld underplayed expertise with understated intensity in a seemingly effortless fashion and there is already evidence that this young prodigy has the same palatable knack ...

"HE TOOK ROYAL ASCOT BY STORM TWO YEARS AGO. Now charismatic US trainer Wesley Ward is back with a team of eight - and, boy, is he confident ....."

"Gold Cup favourite RITE OF PASSAGE in setback. writes TONY O'HEHIR. Decision on last years hero to be made at weekend."

"Publically picking the looser in a two -horse race was a humiliating experience." JON LEES with a special report on racing's handling-and the major ramifications - of the TOTE sale to Betfred.

"RACING'S TOTE SALE HUMILIATION."
JON LEES says that, after a chasening experience, racing must put aside its reservations
about Betfred."Having overcome such active resistance Done would be entitled to play hardball."
"Last week was a bruising one for British sports administrators.Whether it was the FA or the BHA, neither emerged with its credibility fully intact and all because they backed the wrong horse. .....

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL
NICKY HENDERSON is a truly remarkable horseman, that he is being treated like this is both barbaric and cruel. This sort of behaviour involving Paul Roy within the BHA must stop.

CHARLES DICKENS in his writing not so long ago showed vividly the dreadful cruelty that went on.  OLIVER TWIST etc  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dickens

ANNA SEWEL in her BLACK BEAUTY not so long ago showed vividly the dreadful cruelty that went on to horses.

PRINCESS DIANA in her short lifetime showed us what the word caring actually means, she told us that she wanted to be known as the 'Queen of Hearts'. The recent Royal wedding televised around the world when Princess Diana's son Prince William married Kate Middleton, possibly gave many people all around the world a feeling of joy, a feeling of wellbeing, that perhaps at last the world would become a happier place to live in, that all the shocking cruelty to children and to all living creatures that we share our world with, hope for a far kinder existance.

RACING POST FRIDAY JUNE 10

“THERE’S NO NEED TO FEAR ME” FRED DONE EXCLUSIVE
“RACING CHIEFS  will have no say in business’
“NEW TOTE OWNER FRED DONE  has warned Paul Roy and Paul Dixon, chairman of the BHA and Horsemen’s Group, that they will have no influence over how he runs the business.

“Roy, who first supported the idea of  a Tote foundation before putting his weight behind Sir Martin Broughton’s rival bid, has said that he will work to ensure Betfred maintain the commitments they have made as part of their deal with the government.
“However, Done, who also raised  the possibility of football pool betting in an exclusive interview with the Racing Post, said : “My deals are going to be with the racecourses, not Paul Roy or Paul Dixon. This is not bitterness with anyone. Paul Roy is BHA and Paul Dixon is Horsemen’s Group; what commercial terms can I talk to them about?

“They’ve nothing to sell and I’ve nothing to buy from them . And if  they think they are going to have some sort of  control, that’s not on. No-one’s going to have power of veto over how we run our business.”

“THE BETFRED BOSS  is the man racing didn’t want in charge of the Tote but, he tells  HOWARD WRIGHT, he won’t bear  grudges and will deliver for the sport.

“RIGHT SAYS FRED
“Let’s work together to make this a massive success.”
“I guarantee I’ll make this a success. And the big winners – as well as racing – will be punters in the Tote’s shops.”  John (the greatest jockey) Francome’s dreams come true….

“I wouldn’t have put money into the other bid in a million years”

“The government had made its decision and  Fred Done’s wife Mo, who has walked every step of the way in the making of Betfred, turned to him, ‘I’m proud of you,” she said.
“That meant a lot,” Done reflects, “more than the fact that I was proud myself that we’d done it.”   Read more in today’s Racing Post

"PRIZE – MONEY faces more cuts amid levy fears. 2012 fixture list delayed as uncertainty
grows.“ Prize-money in Britain, which last year suffered a serious slump in Levy Board contributions, is coming under further pressure and could be cut within weeks after another slide in the money paid  to racing from bookmakers’ gross profit’s.

“And fears over funding have already had an effect as the 2012 fixture list process has been suspended due to uncertainty over prize- money, the BHA revealed yesterday.

“The Racing Post understands that Levy Board members were warned  at Wednesday’s meeting that the yield for 2010-11 was likely to dip  below £60 million for the first time since the turn of the century.

“A figure of £59.5m has been suggested, which compares with a forecast of £65m adopted by board members last November for purposes of setting the 2011 budget… read more in to days Racing Post.

"THE NEWS WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR

"ARISE SIR HENRY

JON LEES BRINGS US THIS NEWS

“RACING WORLD REJOICES AS HUGELY POPULAR TRAINER RECEIVES A KNIGHTHOOD”

HENRY CECIL yesterday said that he was touched and overwhelmed to learn that his outstanding training career was to be recognised by the award of a knighthood in the Queen’s birthday honours list .

“THE NINE-TIMES CHAMPION TRAINER said was surprised but ‘terribly grateful’ to be knighted for services to horseracing , an accolade many in the sport will feel was long overdue.
“In a major boost to horseracing, Cecil received the top sporting honour in the awards list, which also recognised members of England’s Ashes – winning cricket team  and golfer Lee Westwood.

Cecil, who recorded his 25th Classic success of a 42-year career when FRANKEL landed the Qipco 2,000 Guineas in April, joins Sir Michael Stoute and Sir Mark Prescott among the ranks of Britain’s training knights.

“Cecil, 68, said that he learned that his name had been put forward after the York May meeting but couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it was going to be true.

“I’m terribly grateful to whoever was responsible for it and I’m more than slightly overwhelmed by the whole thing,’ he said.
“I do feel quite funny knowing that I am receiving a knighthood.”

LEE MOTTERSHEAD “ racing has received perfect fillip on eve of Royal Ascot week. A head so often tilted is held high is ‘TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT.”

“The champagne  need not stay on ice until Tuesday. We must sleep three more nights before the sumptuous delights of Royal Ascot can be savoured, but racing, those who work in it and those who love it, already, already have good reason to celebrate .

“We, like you, send the heartiest congratulations to Sir Henry Cecil. The head, so often tilted to one side, should this morning be held high.

“Sir Henry Cecil. . It looks right because it is right. Many have referred to him as Sir Henry for years, partly in jest, partly as a nudge to those ministers and mandarins who make suggestions to Buckingham Palace. Now we can call him Sir Henry without fear of contradiction. The palace has given its approval, a little later than some may have liked, but better late than never. Sir Bruce Forsyth no doubt feels the same. From Cecil himself the reaction will be dignified, modest and restrained. It will be up to the rest of us to sing his praises. For he is far more than a jolly good fellow.  He is a brilliant fellow, a true genius of his craft, a nine time champion trainer, the winner of 25 British Classics and the producer of countless equine greats.

“And in his care this very day is an animal perhaps superior to any previously stabled at Warren Place. From the moment the Qipco 2,000 Guineas was one in such an extraordinary and unprecedented manner it seemed possible that a knighthood  might be awarded perhaps to FRANKEL if not Cecil.

“An Ascot opening day more gripping and absolutely ripping than the writers of My Fair Lady could have ever imagined.”

“Every where you look there are stars. FRANKEL and the St James’s Palace Stakes might get top billing on day one, and the showdown between GOLDICOVA and CANFORD CLIFFS that unleashes the meeting.

“”On Wednesday there is outrageous Aussie import SO YOU THINK, while 24 hours later his Ballydoyle stablemate FAME AND GLORY seeks just that when attempting to follow in the Gold Cup footsteps of YEATS. Friday offers some of racing’s finest fillies in the Coronation Stakes while on Saturday two legends are already booked to appear in the winners enclosure – Dame Shirley Bassey and Sir Cliff Richard.”

“SIR HENRY IN NUMBERS TO DATE

ROYAL ASCOT 2011 FIVE DAYS OF TOP RACING FROM TUESDAY JUNE 14th THROUGH TO SATURDAY JUNE 18th THIS NEXT WEEK.

“FRANKEL, TWICE OVER and WORLD DOMINATION  will be charged with adding to their trainer’s record haul of 72 Royal Ascot triumphs. The 73rd will be different, for it will be the first trained by Sir Henry Cecil. Oh, what a man. Oh what a knight.”
J.MARGARET CLARKE FOR TURFCALL

SIR HENRY CECIL a truly remarkable horseman, united with the unique and very remarkable sport of horseracing. Henry’s career achievements have brought the equine world forward. The reflection of which now royally recognised to benefit all mankind and their association with all animal’s needs, caring and  minding, a massive step forward  in the right direction.

There are key reasons for adopting these practices, not all thoroughbred’s in training are easy to handle and to ride. Such animals if handled and ridden badly in training may never reach the racecourse at all. Especially if taking the dangerous advice contained within the Burnham Report.

NO ONE CAN HOPE TO TRAIN A RACEHORSE IN AN ALLOTMENT.
