"LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
Piggott jnr a chip off the old block"

"Lester Piggott said yesterday he was looking forward to the raceriding debut this afternoon of his 19-year-old-son Jamie.

"Piggott jnr is a late starter compared to his famous father, whose own incredible career began aged ten and who won the first of his nine Epsom Derbys by the age of 18.

"Jamie Piggott will turn 20 in September and rides the Tommy Stack-trained Pivotal Rock
in the 1m+ handicap at Killarney.

Piggott snr said: " He has to start somewhere. He's been riding for a long time, and of course he is looking forward to it.  I'm not nervous, I just hope he has a good ride, that's all. He rides fine but other people will have to be the judge of how good he is.

"He added: "Jamie is in Ireland and I don't see him much, so I just leave it all to him, but I'm looking forward to it."

The new Piggott on the block made his mark on the pony racing circuit at the age of 14, but put racehorses on hold to complete his final exams at school.

"After seven months with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle-where his father was stable jockey to Vincent O' Brien -  the apprentice began working full- time for Stack in Tipperary.

"Fozzy Stack, assistant to his father, said: "Jamie has been coming to us on and off since he was a kid. Today's a big day for him and we're all hoping everything goes well and her enjoys himself."

"Lester's daughter Tracy Piggott, the RTE presenter, echoed those sentiments and described the jockey  as "really focused and dedicated" .

She continued: "He did a bit of pony racing then got busy with school and exams, but he's come back to it again. He's really focused and dedicated and incredibly enthusiastic" .

"He's been hoping to get his first ride for a while and I think he will really enjoy having it at Killarney, as there is such a nice atmosphere there" .

"She added that Jamie is not as tall as his 5ft 8ins father and that he is "very keen" to follow in his footsteps and become a professional rider.

"His weight's really good, he looks after himself, he jogs and watches what he eats. " She said. "He seems very keen to make a career out of this. "
