"If Clive was doing things in style it was also noted that he was offering a different approach. In a newspaper piece headed "Brittain does it on Five Bob' Jonathan Powell noted that Pegasus Stables paid good graded wages to experienced lads and quoted the trainer as saying:
"There's still this traditional attitude in many stables of the lad being told "Stand back, say nothing and touch your cap when the owners come in the box" . Lads aren't expected to talk to owners yet they are doing a vital job. Every week I have five or six applications for jobs. The lads know I used to be one of them and so understand their problems. "
"At Pegasus Stables they were being encouraged to call their employer Clive and to talk to owners. The cracks in the glass ceiling were widening
Clive says "You've got to take the
animal into consideration. They don't come out of their boxes every day in the
same frame of mind. They (the racehorses) are affected by different
ground, by left-handed or right-handed courses, by different distances, and
these captains of industry don't always appreciate that.
JMC: An estimated 89 percent of global horseracing owners are bloodhorse illiterate. A further difficult problem for all licensed trainers.
