"More than 1,700 years ago a Roman soldier spoke out against the persecution of Christians – and was tortured and ultimately beheaded for refusing to give up his own convictions.
"So ended the life of George of Lydda – but so began the legend of St George, the Christian martyr and brave slayer of dragons.
"Now, about 17 centuries later, the Patron Saint of England continues to be celebrated on this day, April 23, every year, but celebrations are perhaps more muted than they used to be."
