PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
By David Jennings
Racing Post Tuesday October 20, page 3.
“O’Brien: critics don’t know what they’re talking about.”
“AIDAN O’BRIEN yesterday defended
the way Gleneagles has been campaigned, stressing he has always had the star miler’s
best interests in mind, as he mulled over whether to let the duel 2,000 Guineas
(GB) join a powerful Ballydoyle squad at the Breeders’ Cup.
“Gleneagles skipped four
engagements because the ground was not quick enough before beating only four
home in the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot.
“O’Brien immediately admitted he
was wrong to run Gleneagles on his unfavoured going but the experience did not
appear to have affected the Galileo colt, a top-priced 16-1 for the Breeders’
Cup Classic, who showed no ill effects during a workout yesterday morning.
“Reflecting on the criticism he
received from some quarters for his last- minute decision on Gleneagles’
participation on Saturday, the trainer said: “What people say doesn’t really
matter. We do what we believe is the right thing to do by the horse and that is
all that matters to us.
“Usually the people who are doing
the criticising don’t really know what they are talking about. Isn’t that the
reality of it? JMC: Yes, yes, yes true bloodhorse literate respect for champion athlete Gleneagles human rights and needs the number one priority.
“The ground was holding us up all year. I said no
all year and I should have said no again. He’s a very low-moving horse and he
is just not suited to that type of ground that was at Ascot on Saturday. “
“He added yesterday: “Obviously Gleneagles didn’t
do much this morning but he seems fine after the race at Ascot and we’ve put
him in the Classic. We’ll see how he is over the next few days before we decide
if he will travel. “ O’Brien said.
“Birchwood’s standout performance this season came when he captured the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in July before finishing fifth in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and third in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh.
“Found, for whom an audacious last-to-first-bid
was attempted in the Qipco Champion Stakes, has come out of her Ascot exertions
well according to O’Brien and she is on course for the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
“Found
seems to have taken her run in the Champion Stakes well and we’ve entered her
for the Turf over a mile and a half, while War Envoy is in the Turf Mile and
the Dirt Mile so has the option of either of those.
“O’ Brien is responsible for the favourites in
both the Juvenile Fillies Turf thanks to
Alice Springs and the Juvenile Turf, for which the market is headed by
impressive recent Dundalk winner Hit It A Bomb, and both are on course for
Keeneland.
“Hit It A Bomb, Shogun and Waterloo Bridge are in
the Juvenile Turf and we’ve given Waterloo Bridge another option there as well.
Alice Springs is in the Juvenile Fillies Turf,” O’Brien said.
Richard
Fahey will break new ground when he saddles his first Breeders’ Cup
runner with Birchwood.
“Owned by Godolphin, Birchwood will contest the
mile Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf the owners won at Keeneland, a race
the owners won with Outstrip in 2013.
“Birchwood’s standout performance this season came when he captured the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in July before finishing fifth in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and third in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh.
“Birchwood is entered for the Juvenile Turf at the
Breeders’ Cup. He’ll be our first ever runner at the meeting.” Fahey tweeted. “
