"CHAMPION jump trainer Paul Nicholls yesterday spoke of his dread that Kempton, the course where he has saddled the winner of the King George v1 Chase nine times, including five times with the iconic Kauto Star, could be sold for housing and torn down. The trainer said he was shocked  and confused by the announcement that rocked racing on Tuesday that the Jockey Club, along with house builder Redrow, would be submitting plans to the local council to demolish Kempton  and allow 3,000 homes to be built on the site.

JMC: Like telling the British people that Buckingham Palace or the Tate Gallery are to be demolished to make way for housing.  A big bonfire made to burn all the paintings on.

"Champion Nicholls hoping plans don’t come to fruition.

He said: “I’ve had so many magical days at Kempton, some of the best of my career.  I’ve enjoyed no end of good fortune there-it’s a great jumping track where you know you’ll find better ground through the season more than at any other course.

“It’s a speed track that suites bold- jumping, free-running chasers. Brilliant horses like Desert Orchid, Wayward Lad and Kauto Star that set the place alight every Christmas.

“So obviously I dread the thought of the doors at Kempton closing for the final time and hope it doesn’t happen.

“An investment of £500 million or more over the next ten years has been promised by the Jockey Club as part of the plans but Nicholls, who saddled Modus to win the Lanzaroti Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday, questioned where the money for the investment would be coming from.

“Nicholls, writing in his Betfair blog, said: “We’ve been told that £100 million will be raised from the sale of Kempton and that is balanced by the Jockey Club’s current debt of £115m. Yet in the next breath their group chief executive Simon Bazalgette  is promising an investment of £500m in our sport over the next decade.

“That type of mega funding for jump racing from the bottom upwards sounds terrific to me but I surely cannot be the only one wondering where all this money is coming from. So at the moment I feel strongly that to have a balanced view I need to know a lot more detail about these startling proposals before making up my mind. ”

“Should plans for Kempton proceed, Nicholls added he would be in favour of moving the King George v1 Chase, a race he has won nine times to Ascot rather than Sandown, as has initially been suggested.

“Given the choice I’d move it to Ascot, a much more suitable venue from a racing point of view as it is an outstanding jumps track with excellent facilities and the necessary infrastructure to accommodate a large crowd, “ he said.

“Just imagine more than 30,000 jumping enthusiasts at Ascot on Boxing Day for the most important jumps race in mid-winter.

“That would be superb, much better than the race at Sandown which would be packed out with half that amount of people. Plus there’s the fact the ground is almost always bottomless there at that time of year. ”

JMC:  We have been led to believe that British horseracing’s aim is to be run for the purpose to encourage working families to go racing on their day’s off, to refresh.  This Jockey Club Kempton Park racecourse sale statement scams this direction as a lie. Kempton Park a London track of massive significance.

 FOR THOUGHT:

“Altior likely to run in Game Spirit next. “  Stuart Riley:

“NICKY HENDERSON has confirmed Altior will not run in Saturday’s Clarence House Chase at Ascot, with next month’s Game Spirit Chase the likely stepping stone to the Cheltenham Festival  for the seven- year-old.

“Henderson said the Berkshire Community Foundation backed Ascot event would come too soon for his stable star as he has had an easy time of it since his impressive 18 length win in the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase at Kempton over Christmas.

“Altior will not run in the Clarence House , ” Henderson said yesterday. He’s just finished his midwinter break and it just comes a bit soon, especially as it would mean putting him into a Grade 1 in open company.

“There are a few other options, but the Game Spirit looks the most likely, as I do like Newbury and the timing works well.

“If Altior does run in the Grade 2 Game Spirit it would replicate the route Sprinter Sacre took from Kempton to Cheltenham when he won the Arkle in 2012. Altior is a best-price 5-4 for this year’s Racing Post-sponsored  2m novice championship event.

“Henderson also provided an update on Saturday’s Listed  32Red Casino Chase winner Vaniteux, who was the last horse left challenging adaouvan in last year’s Arkle before departing at the second- last.

“He’s come out of the race extremely well,” said Henderson . “It was the perfect race for him and these horses have got to have somewhere to run.

“He can’t really run in handicaps and he can’t really run in Grade 1s – he falls in between the two-and so it’s great to find a race for him. I don’t know where he’ll go next. ”
