Wohler 'couldn't be happier' with Arc hope Novellist
By James Burn
TRAINER Andreas Wohler on Tuesday reported leading Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe fancy Novellist in great form for Sunday's race. ( 1 hour ago)More
Paddy Power's view
"Orfevre is our worst loser by an awful long way, although Novellist winning wouldn't be a good result either. The addition of Channel 4 Racing covering the event means losses on both of these horses could be very significant body blows." (10 mins ago)
21 in Arc
By James Burn
That's how many have been left in this morning, although Leading Light, Treve and Meandre are expected to be supplemented on Thursday. All the major names are among the 21. (31 mins ago)
France: Arc field to take shape?

There's a forfeit stage for Sunday's Arc this morning. According to France Galop's website 106 remain in the autumn championship, while St Leger winner Leading Light will be added to the field. Stick around to see who's been left in. (2 hours ago)

McCririck: C4 figures 'disastrous' since axe
By Tom Kerr
JOHN MCCRIRICK on Monday claimed Channel 4 Racing has suffered a "disastrous" drop in viewers since his departure from the programme as he spoke on the first day of his age discrimination claim against the sport's terrestrial broadcaster. (15 hours ago)More
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
David Ashforth:
Twice voted journalist of the year
Twice voted journalist of the year
PICTURE: Dan Abraham
David Ashforth sets the scene as the protagonists prepare to square up in the Channel 4 Racing tribunal..
"While
McCririck hands out his own witness statement, Beverley [his solicitor] advises
him against doing so. McCririck ignores his advice. A paucity of hair but there isn't a wig in sight.
"FAIRS
FAIR, he does look quite old, but that's no reason to get rid of him, according
to John McCririck, who was born on April 17, 1940, just after Tom and Jerry and
just before Bugs Bunny. Tom and Jerry died in 2005 but Bugs Bunny is still
going strong and, if Bugs Bunny can do it, so can Big Mac. I think that's it.
"The
other side (Channel 4 and IMG) agree (I'm guessing) that McCririck is, if not
old, then not young, but insist they didn't get rid of him because his birthday
was in the wrong place. There were other reasons.
"It
will be interesting to hear what they are but we can't yet because, having
gathered late at 10.15am, the London Central Employment Tribunal breaks up
early at 10.35am. Led by Judge Alison Lewzey, assisted by lay members David
Buckley and Ms A (Alison? Alice ? Anastasia?)
Mitchell, the panel need to mug up on
the subject before examining it. I'm sure that at school we were told you were
supposed to do that before exam. Still, times, like Channel 4's racing team,
change.
"My
name is Miss Lewzey, " says Judge Lewzey. No one challenges her. "The
issues are quite straightforward. "
Even so, it's expected to take six or seven days to sort them out.
"Judge
Lewzey is a no nonsense lady, crisp, concise, dark jacket, striped blouse, neat
hair, neat mind, thick-rimmed spectacles, a touch of the girl guide leader
about her demeanour. "I think we
need to do some housekeeping, don't we?"
"BEVERLEY
cautions journalists against placing the contents of the statement in the
public domain until McCririck has given
evidence. The statement has 106 paragraphs, and some of them are jolly
interesting. "
"In
typically combative form, McCririck said that he intended his case against
Channel 4 to act as a watershed moment in tackling age discrimination in the
media and elsewhere.
"Last
month David Blunkett MP said, 'The way TV executives worship the cult of youth seems to be an unstoppable fetish'
," McCririck said. "I am saying it is not an unstoppable fetish. If this tribunal awards punitive damages then
no employer ever again will dare sack someone just because of their age. "
"The
tribunal resumes this morning,"
