Pause for Thought
Sadness felt when trainer and his star are parted.
Published in Racing Post on Monday July 13, 2015 page 11. The Monday Column
Lee Mottershead
"TRAINERS train horses but owners own horses, which gives
them the right to send those horses wherever they choose. That is how it should
be. JMC: Is it? All animal’s have their own daily
human rights and needs, which need to be carried out every day, especially a racehorse
in training, or in retirement. Racehorse owners in particular need to realize how much work goes into
training a racehorse every day. Perhaps it is the Racehorse Owners Association
who should be helping to educate owners about bloodhorse literacy. It is estimated that 80 percent of owners are bloodhorse illiterate.
You often hear owners talk about retiring racehorses,
some owners are so naïve that they believe that their horse’s heaven is being
turned out in a paddock to graze somewhere. Forgotten about. No heaven at all. Stark neglect.
“Inevitably, though, trainers spend vastly more times
with the animals in their care than those who pay the bills. Which mean deeper
bonds can develop. Rarely can there have ever been a deeper bond than that felt
by Robin Dicken toward Restless Harry, which makes it all the sadder the
veteran has left his care. The fear is that bloodhorse illiterate owners don't realise what their horse's daily needs are.
“In my time visiting
training yards, I have seldom seen a horse so admired by those who looked after him as Kauto Star
Team (Paul) Nicholls at Ditcheat. "
When a bloodhorse illiterate owner shows he does not realise the highly skilled work that a trainers team have faithfully carried out over years of success at the highest level, the trust that builds between horse and handler rider at home like has happened with Restless Harry and Kauto Star. It is heart breaking to realise that owner, or owners are totally clueless in weighing up what training a racehorse actually means. The part played by a trainer and his team is highly skilled, a massive work of art, ongoing every day, a work in progress, developing the trust the horse develops in the people around him, in the person with each horse each day, and the person who rides him out every day. The "IN TRAINING" bit, badly misunderstood by some owners, abusive, all taken for granted. It does not help either to have the governments' bloodhorse illiterate regulation government libelling and slandering everyone who has achieve true bloodhorse literacy in their own right.
KEEPING WATCHFUL EYE ON WORRYING DEVELOPMENTS INSIDE RSPCA
The RSPCA is not qualified to run British horseracing.
“RACING’S largely positive relationship with the RSPCA has been of great benefit to the sport. There have been blips perhaps, inevitable, but generally the leading animal welfare organization has been keen to work in tandem with racing, often offering vocal and timely support. “
The RSPCA is bloodhorse illiterate at horseracing level, the RSPCA has scant knowledge about the training and riding of racehorses. They are more involved with local pets in distress.
