“SOMETHING of a footnote to Timmy Murphy’s 14-day
Kempton suspension on Thursday evening was the £290 fine handed to Jamie Osborne
for not having informed his on-course representative of the rider’s
instructions.
“Rule (C) 45 states: “A trainer must give, or cause
to be given, to the rider of any horse trained by him such instructions as are
necessary to ensure the horse runs on its merits. (Who is its?)
Rule (C) 46.2, under which Osborne was penalised, says representatives must be
made aware of those instructions.
JMC: No trainer employs a jockey who can't ride, or doesn't suit his horse.
“Osborne argues the belief trainers do, or should, tell jockey what tactics to employ in a race is seriously antiquated.
“I don’t give jockey’s instructions, “ he says. “With an apprentice I’ll try to give a little more guidance, but certainly with a senior jockey I will pass on only what I know of the horse.
“When I was riding, I found trainers who tried to
tie me down to instructions had very few winners. Those who simply told me what
they knew about their horses had lots of winners.
“Adam Kirby has won twice on Illegally Blond for me
in the last few weeks. The first time he made the running; the second time he
held her up. Both times he made the decision about how to ride her. He will
have an idea how a race is going to be run. That’s more important than how I
might want a horse ridden.
“People, including stewards, seem to think trainers
have a crystal ball and can see where a horse should be positioned. It’s absolute
rubbish.”
“Grugy debate
“IT WAS marvellous to see Sire De Grugy the icing on
a wonderful Sandown cake for the Moores
in Saturday’s Tingle Creek Chase.
“Inevitably, there was much discussion about whether
the stewards had been correct not to disqualify Sire De Grugy in favour of
Special Tiara. The officials decided the runner-up’s loss of momentum when
broadsided at the final fence was not enough to trigger an amendment as “The winner appeared to be holding him
comfortably on the run to the line” ,
“Had Special Tiara been so badly hampered at the
fence rider Noel Fehily had been unshipped, there would not even had been a
debate to be had. For in such circumstances unless the winning rider is guilty
of dangerous riding, there is nothing stewards can do to punish the ‘aggressor’
horse.
“It’s probably scant consolations, but if he had
been left riderless they would have gone home with neither a penny nor any
right of appeal. “
COMMON SENSE CONSIDERATIONS:
JMC: In testing ground as on Saturday, many racehorses coming to the end of such a race are getting tired. All
jockeys riding into the last few fences of a race will be aware of this fact. A rider - jockey does not want to interfere with the way his horse sights and strides into a fence to take off. Plus the fact all the other jockey's challenging to win this race especially Noel Fehily, will have been well aware that Sire De Grugy sights his fences leaving himself enough room on his near side to take off. These are key clues that all jockey's weigh - up about their opponents.
