GRAHAM CUNNINGHAM The leading TV pundit joins the Post with a new weekly column

Here's a flavour of the Graham Cunningham column

"And therein lies the beauty of big-time Flat racing. The wheel turns quickly and once the weather turns the boys of summer are playing for high stakes week in week out with nothing resembling the midwinter lull which blights British jumping nowadays. (11 mins ago) "

Graham Green "DWYER hit with 'unbelievable' 56-day ban ........

"MARTIN DWYER was last night in a state of shock after receiving a 56 - day ban over his riding of a beaten favourite in India that came close to sparking a riot last month."

Royal Western India Turf Club

"The Derby-winning jockey was found guilty of not allowing ICE AGE to run on her merits when finishing third in a 6f handicap  at Mahalaxmi racecourse in Mumbai on February 17. No, no no  MARTIN DWYER was not guilty of any such thing, no jockey can compete without a horse and if during a race that horse fails to respond to her rider for whatever reason, in this case ICE AGE in pain unable to answer Martin's ask, call, Martin will know immediately if a horse he is riding is not right for whatever reason. No rider can win without his horses imput. If a horse cramps up with you in  a race there is nothing you can do. The last thing you would do in such a situation, is to start hitting that horse, to suit the punters.

We know what happered last year with Richard Hughes riding in India. We know how the British regulators colluded with the Indian Turf Club over that.

The dangerously stagnant bloodhorse illiterate British Horseracing Authority Government
responsible for cruelly allowing abuse to racehorses within horseracing around the world. Running horseracing without any recognition or respect at all to the human rights and needs of all racehorses to include their riders.

BHA their attitude in colluding with Royal Western India Turf Club last year, is surely odds on to remain the same this time as well. No Equus Zone,  sadly no recognition of an animals rights. Quote from Monty Roberts "It's like a knife going through you."

"DWYER, 36, attended yesterday's reconvened Royal Western India Turf Club inquiry at which he strenuously denied the allegations, and described the outcome as "unbelievable".

"Unless successful in an appeal that could lead to the penalty that could be increased, Dwyer's suspension, if reciprocated by the BHA , will rule him out from April 6th to May 31 inclusive.

"The severity of the punishment, which follows the 50-day ban imposed on Richard Hughes last year by the Indian authorities for an offence not on the statute book in Britain but reciprocated by the BHA, is sure to heighten concern among regular visitors to India like Dwyer that the risk associated with riding there in winter may outweigh financial rewards.

"A dejected  DWYER, who landed the 2003 Oaks  on CASUAL LOOK  and 2009 Derby on SIR PERCY, said: "I'm shocked and extremely disappointed. I intend to appeal."

"Dwyer, who rode IN THE SPOTLIGHT to victory in the 2012 Indian Derby, finished third on 6-4 favourite ICE AGE, who veered markedly  to the right close home and collided with a rival, after which DWYER pulled ICE AGE away. When he began to ride ICE AGE out in the final stages, the filly again hung right and was subsequently found to have bled.

"Afterwards angry racegoers surrounded the weighing room, demanding that the race be declared void. The situation was defused when officials declared ICE AGE a non-runner and all bets on her were ordered to be refunded.

"Should Dwyer be unable to overturn the ban in India, he would have an opportunity to argue it is not reciprocated by the BHA., although  Hughes failed when going down that route.

"Explaining  the BHA's position in cases like Dwyer's, spokesman Robin Mounsey said: "When a suspension is imposed on a rider by an international authority, the home durastriction would first await to be requested by the relevant racing authority regarding any suspensions , and subsequently how they would expect the suspension to be reciprocated in our jurisdiction.

"However, any jockey has the right to ask their home authority not to reciprocate any suspension.

"Normally for such an application to be successful the rider would need to provide grounds as to why we should not enforce the ban which under normal circumstances would be reciprocated , for example if they can prove the disciplinary process didn't comply with laws of natural justice."

"Professional Jockey's Association chief executive Paul Struthers said "In the event Martin's appeal fails, our strong advice would be to make an application to ask the BHA not to reciprocate what, in our view, is an entirely unjust and perverse decision.

"Martin is entirely innocent of the charges - one only needs to view the head-on replay of the race to know that - and will fight to clear his name."

"Dwyer's father-in-law, trainer William Muir, has PURR ALONG entered for the Qipco 1.000 guineas and Investec Oaks, both of which fall within Dwyer's suspension window.

"Muir said: "Its a joke. I was baffled when they made the same sort of decision over Richard Hughes last year and feel the same about this." Not a very funny joke though for Martin.

"Chin up was the message from Hughes, who said: "It's worse when you're waiting to find out, because you don't know how long you are going to be out; whether it could be like six months or a year.

"The good thing is at least his ban has come during the early part of the season."

JMC Why is" TEAM KATRAK"  licensed trainer COOJI KATRAK of ICE AGE (4yo filly) not called to account over this distressing performance? Why is he standing back and letting Martin Dwyer take all the blame? A filly who hangs badly in the last furlong or so of a race is usually a sign of exhaustion. To ignore a filly showing signs of accute exhaustion is  starkly cruel. All punters should be allowed to understand  properly what an Equus Zone is.

Has ICE AGE been checked out thoroughly by a vet since?  If not, why not? The veterinary findings should be published, before all blame is placed on Martin.

" TEAM KATRAK" the Indian Turf Club need to take a closer look as to how this filly is being trained, prepared  at home before they place all the blame on Dwyer. No jockey can put right in a race what is going wrong every day at home.  Lip service passing the buck over something like this is a criminal act.

MUMBAI: The stewards of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) have suspended jockey S Shinde for unsatisfactory riding on his mount Ice Age in the division I of the Lufthansa-Senator Trophy run on October 14 last month. Three-year-old filly Ice Age was available at longer odds in the race and had finished seventh in a field of 16 runners. Fairy Queen, available at 15/1, had won the race.

According to a statement issued by the RWITC, the stewards held inquiry into the running and riding of ICE AGE last Sunday in Mumbai. Stewards questioned jockey Shinde and trainer of Ice Age, Cooji Katrak during the inquiry.
