WHAT DID QUEEN ANNE DISCOVER IN THE SUMMER OF 1711?
With a lot of courage Queen Anne founded Royal Ascot in 1711 for £558 19s 5p

QUEEN ANNE discovered that she had the opportunity to purchase some land to develop a racecourse at Ascot, just six miles from Windsor Castle, one of her last pleasures. Not that she had many pleasures at all during her lifetime.

THE PECKING ORDER OF BRITISH SOCIETY?  The pecking order of British politics . The pecking order of the British Legal Justice System. The pecking order of World Bankers. The pecking order of the National Health Service'  The pecking order of the British horseracing government. The pecking order of all the religions.  The pecking order of everything British under the sun. Has much changed since 1711? Not a lot.

Queen Anne had minimal independence throughout her lifetime, she was dominated by the vitriolic Duchess of Marlborough who's attitude was that to spend money on a racecourse was unthinkable. To give the laundry maid a £5 per annum rise a definite no, no.  Queen Anne prevented from buying a new gown the norm. Unfortunately no sooner had Queen Anne rid herself of the Duchess of Marlborough's evil influence,   others presented themselves. (now why doesn't that surprise me?)

The Duke of Cumberland a keen racing man and believed to be a founder member of The Jockey Club  between 1750 - 1753 heralding the first official List of Colours in  1762. His own colours listed as "plain purple."

The British Political System needs throwing away, there is not one shred of evidence to show that it can do anything at all for anyone other than mess other peoples lives up big time. And worst of all  starving  little children, the sick and the elderly to death.  Which it has been doing, and getting away with doing since 1711. The petty ridiculous fuss hitting the headlines now over Chris  Huhne and his X  totally out of perspective, wasting huge amounts of time and money, when there are little children and elderly people starving to death in the cold each and every day. In context Huhne and his X  a fine, taking seconds. Not years of legal waffle costing fortunes. Huge amounts of money falling into already rich lawyers pockets. (A disgrace if ever there was one).

On nearly the eve of the Cheltenham Festival Championships 2013 and bearing in mind all the people who will be flocking to Cheltenham this next week and all the true professional horsemen (Equus Zone) who have worked tirelessly  throughout their lifetimes to make Cheltenham what it is today, through every adversity they have never given up striving for better, all the true horsemen from Ireland and in this country deserve better, much, much better as do all the rest, to include the horses.

"GOODEE, time for my Cheltenhamtips. They're better than Pricewise's tips because when Tom Segal tips something, its price gets shorter whereas I think you'll find that, when I tip something, it doesn't. If its 10-1 now, it will be at least 10-1 tomorrow, probably more. That's proper tipping for you.

What do you think? Are you going to study the Form to find the most likely winner in this race yourself? Try it, work through it horse by horse (with your Racing Post on Monday) and see what you find, this is what David means when he says 'head it' think it through). Make this your 'Number one Project' to go in your 'Jump Racing' reference file for your future reference be sure to keep your Racing Post as well. Then at the Cheltenham Festival 2014 you can check out which Novice Chasers have gone on to do well in this Steeplechase catagory, and may well be worth following.

The Arkle is a Novice Chase (Big fences) for horses who are just starting out in this catagory. Steeplechasing (Big chase fences, make no mistake they take some jumping especially at racing pace) It is tackling such big fences at racing pace that make these 'Novice Chases' the most dangerous of all races. It is a highly skilled work of art to prepare a 'Novice Chaser', to ride and to guide him, at home, and in a race) Confidence can drain away fast with a 'Novice Chaser' if he is overfaced too soon, or looses consentration with other horses all around him whilst racing for instance.

"On Monday, it was the ninth annual Stud and Stable Staff Award lunch, which is the most uplifting awards event of the year, for which we have Sheikh Mohammed to thank. Through Godolphin, he has funded generous awards; to the winner, the finalists and their yards, and he has carried on funding them. It's a fine recognition of valued contributions by stud and stable staff and it would be a hard-hearted person who didn't find pleasure in it. Well done to the Employee of the Year, Brian 'Jock' Bennett, Mark Johnson's long-serving assistant trainer, and to all the other winners and finalists.

Shiekh Mohammed's, generosity and passion for horses and racing worldwide to include the area at present termed to be the British " National Stud and Stable Staff Awards" just recently having taken place for 2013.  Is a sound 'Leg Up'  gifted, a step in the right direction achieved by Sheikh Mohammed. A wow, wow, wow step.  A prop to a badly flawed British Horseracing Authority Government on the skids, being run without an Equus Zone, a key ingredient without which there would not be any horseracing. Shiekh Mohammed's actions here have temporarily propped up a sport (not a war) being run without an Equus Zone. Left dangerously out of perspective and context ongoing over the last 6 decades.

The "National Stud and Stable Staff Association" TITLE is lumping all those who belong in a truly run Equus Zone together as of no account.

Not allowing a true foundation Equus Zone structure to exist even. All the vital bloodhorse literate every day skills remain unrecognised, hidden within an organisation termed to be a " National Stud and Stable Staff Association" A title statement that does not ring true.

Highly skilled horsemen (what there are left of them) being hidden within an organization that does not value skills of any kind, a British Horseracing Authority government who believe that they can run British horseracing without the bloodhorse literate.

"Some of us decided to make a day of it. Unfortunately, dinner fell at the third last hurdle at Southwell, along with Robert Thornton and Our Phylli Vera. Sadly, Thornton now misses Cheltenhamwhile trainer Alan King faces the daunting task of finding another equally feeble contest for Our Phylli Vera. At least no one in the William Hill shop said: "Don't worry, your money's only lent, " a half -finished expression, the full version of which continues, "Until you try to get it back again."

"Never mind, Cheltenham will put everything right, and in a rather shocking way. This year, the key to success on the opening day is to picture a terrace full of football fans, all shouting: "Head it! Head it!

"You see, when it comes to the Racing Post Arkle, and Overturn, you must use your head, not your heart (or your feet). Overturn is one of my favourite horses and Jason Maguire one of my favourite jockeys and it will be sad to see Maguire dissapointed afterwards, his hopes dashed (I don't suppose Overturn will care too much, as long as dinner isn't late) but Maguire will just have to come to terms with it as best he can.

"Overturn finished second in last years Champion Hurdle and has taken well to fences and is as bonny and willing a front -runner as you could wish for, but he's not going to win and, at about 3-1, the thing to do is to lay him for all you are worth. Admittedly, if Overturn does win, that means you won't be worth anything afterwards and might be homeless, carless and wifeless, but as long as you aren't too old, you'll be able to start life again, sadder but wiser, possibly.

"OVERTURN, admirably versatile, has jumped well and won well in his three chases but he's faced a grand total of only nine opponents, most of them not good enough to provide a meaningful challenge. Their combined record over fences currently reads four wins from 28 tries and only one, Conquisto, is rated over 140. Conquisto has since been beaten easily at level weights by a horse rated 133, in a three-horse race, before successfully given 7lb to the very moderate, 115 -rated, no- wins- from- six-chases Jack the Gent.

"Similar holes can be picked in Simonsig's form over fences and, in both cases, it's not what they achieved but how they achieved it that was impressive. What matters more than the dubious value of Overturn's form is that leading all the way at Cheltenham, a course less well suited to front-runners than Sandown, Doncasteror Musselburgh, against better horses, possibly on unsuitable soft ground, will be a much more formidable test. Overturn isn't very big and he still has to show that he can impose himself over Cheltenham's fences. Anyway, you can think what you like but that's what I think.

.

"After that, there's the Champion Hurdle (don't know) and, after that, there's a break during the cross-country chase to give us time to decide what to back each-way against Quevega in the mare's hurdle. That's the race Quevega wins every year before going on to win that other race at Punchastown. She's a nine-year-old now and maybe she'll be less formidable this year but, in any event, the best each-way bets are Alasi, at 20-1, and Swing Bowler (also entered in the County Hurdle), also 20-1. I could tell you why - and you would find the reasons jolly convincing-but it'll save a lot of time, and words, if you just take my word for it.

"So that's the festival off to a cracking start and it's a pity that there not room to tell you what's going to win on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but I'll tell you next Saturday. In the mean time - head it!"
