"McCririck's £3m age discrimination claim against C4 to be heard today

"FORMER Channel 4 Racing betting pundit John McCririck will attempt to get his job back today as he takes his £3 million age discrimination claim before a full employment tribunal hearing in London.

"McCririck , 73, is seaking damages and compensation, or his reinstatement  to the role which over 29 years made him one of the recognised figures on television, in the case against the broadcaster and the TV production company IMG Sports Media.

"The case, which is scheduled to last seven days, will go ahead after a tribunal judge ruled in June this year that McCririck had been employed by Channel 4 at the time IMG won the contract from Highflyer to cover horseracing from 2013, having rejected the broadcaster's argument that it did not employ him and that he was working as a freelance.

"McCririck, who has alleged his axing from his  £90,000-a-year role has left him "unemployable" , is claiming £2.5m in punative damages from Channel 4 and IMG Sports Media and £500,000 in basic compensation.

"Yesterday he said: "All I have said is I want my job back. I would have stopped the case straight away if they'd done that. "

"A Channel 4 spokesperson said: "We reject the suggestion that discrimination on the basis of age played any part in the decision  not to include John in the Channel 4 Racing team from 2013 and we are vigorously defending this claiom. "

"Read David Ashforth's report from the courtroom tomorrow, in the Racing Post. "
