Racing pays tribute to retiring Hannon
 By racingpost.com staff 6:01PM 21 NOV 2013

A HOST of figures from the world of racing have paid tribute to trainer Richard Hannon, who on Thursday announced he would be handing the stable's licence to his son Richard jnr on January 1.

Hannon, a five-time champion, thinks the time is right for his son to take over. He has been training since 1970 and enjoyed his first big success when Mon Fils won the 2,000 Guineas in 1973.

Lee Mottershead "Hughes full of praise for retiring champion

"RICHARD HUGHES, Richard Hannon's stable jockey and son-in-law, was yesterday one of many who highlighted the genius and kindness of the retiring champion trainer.

"Hughes, who has been champion Flat Turf jockey for the last two years  with the support of Hannon, will seek to give his boss one last Group 1 success  when he partners Sky Lantern in next month's Hong Kong Mile, but he last night explained  the outcome of that race will have no bearing on Hannon's demeanour.

"Hughes said : "I've ridden for all the best trainers in the world and Richard is right up there with the best of them, but on top of that he is a good person.

"It's on the bad days you need someone behind you, and Richard has a great constitution for dealing with defeat. Win or loose he is always the same the next morning."

"Similar praise came from one of Hannon's principle owners, Julie Wood, who has had more than 100 horses with the trainer since 2000. "It's so good to have been  part of the incredible Richard Hannon era," she said. "He has given us his everything and he has enhanced my life. It's an absolute privilige to know him. "When you're a racehorse owner there's more time spent off the racecourse than on it but Richard makes it all a great experience. He keeps you engaged and interested and if you ever need to be cheered up, Richard's your man. We have a  high regard for both Richard jnr. The two of them have done as excellent job together.."

Jumps trainer Alan King has received owner Harry Ponsonby's two racehorses Tiger Cliff and First Mohecan from Newmarket trainer Lady Cecil. King the recipient of  many ex-Warren Place horses. "These two  are the highest- rated Flat horses Alan has ever had. " said Ponsonby. "This isn't some new experiment we're trying, it's a proven method. Nor is it just a case of going jumping, they'll be returning to the Flat for major prizes. We've got to keep them apart but, hopefully, Tiger Cliff could turn into a Cup horse. "
