A lot was on the line when Gentildonna went to post for the Japan Cup on Sunday, and she prevailed with an historic victory in front of her adoring fans.

During the run Moore had the four-year-old ideally placed behind the leaders, who set only a moderate pace in the 481 million yen ($5.2 million) race.

The pair struck the front early in the straight and held off a desperate late challenge from $30 outsider Denim And Ruby in front of 97,000 people at Tokyo's Fuchu racecourse.

Moore said Gentildonna started to race keenly when the pace steadied soon after the start and was forced to hit the front before he had wanted.

"Luckily she has gears and works up to her top, and she was able to stay in front just long enough."

Hong Kong conditions 'ideal' for The Fugue

THE FUGUE suffered an agonising loss in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita last time out, but connections are preparing to roll the international dice again, with the filly on course for the Longines Hong Kong Vase next month.

Trained by John Gosden, the four-year-old was nailed late on by Ryan Moore and Magician at Santa Anita, a defeat that left jockey William Buick in tears after the race.

However, the filly now has the opportunity become the ninth British-trained winner of the 1m4f race at Sha Tin on December 8, and Simon Marsh, racing and bloodstock manager for owners Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber, reported her to be in fantastic form.

He said: "The Fugue had a very good trip back from the Breeders' Cup and has been absolutely fine. She is in very good form and we are very happy with her.
