Alastair Down writes:
(RP 07.12.2013 p 15)
"Mandela proves the
human heart can rise above adversity. "
"IN
COMMON with many of my generation, it was only after the ending of the
indescribable vile apartheid system that I visited South Africa as much to go
and stand witness on Robin
Island as for any other
reason.
"To
see the miniscule cell in which Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years' incarceration was both chastening and
painfully moving .
"That
Mandela should emerge from the long torture of his imprisonment on that
cherished February day in 1990 as a man without bitterness, rancour or
vengefulness was perhaps his most extraordinary triumph.
"It
was his incorruptible generosity of soul which set him utterly apart and he
restored the largely lost faith that, a handful of times in history, a figure
arises with the power to remind us that even through the most terrible
adversity there is nothing as unquenchable or invincible as the human heart. "
