"Newbury U-turn puts paid to Santa send-up

IT'S a sad truth that some of the best ideas never leave the launch pad. One of them was due for lift-off today, when this column was going to appeal to opportunist racegoers to turn up at Newbury this afternoon dressed as Santa Clause.

 

"Would the new dress code have led to them being turned away from the premier enclosure? Or would they have been frog-marched into the bowels of the grandstand by officials determined  to apply the code to a letter?
