"Connell's Tank out of festival  in wake of drugs case" .
"Top owner acts after Fenton steroids hearing is adjourned" .

By Jonathan Mullin
"THE  steroids controversy in Irish racing took a shock turn yesterday when owner Barry Connell withdrew star novice hurdler The Tallow Tank from the Cheltenham Festival because the furore , leading a to wholesale  refunding of anti-post bets by bookmakers.

"Connell made his move moments after The Tallow Tank's  trainer Philip Fenton had learned his court hearing for possession of anabolic steroids had been adjourned until after Cheltenham.

"The Tallow Tank, twice a Grade 1 winner this season and as short as 8-1 third favourite for the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle on March 12th, will not run again until the Department of  Agriculture, Food and the Marine's  case against Fenton  comes to a conclusion, Connell has confirmed.

"Bookmakers  were swift to offer punters a refund  on anti-post bets after interpreting  Connell's statement as a definite sign The Tallow Tank would not line up for the meeting.

"He said:  "In light of the uncertainty surrounding the deferral of legal proceedings against Philip Fenton I have decided neither of my horses in training with Philip as usual.
"Volvalien, twice in Leopardstown bumpers, could have run in the Weatherby's Champion Bumper at Cheltenham.

"Connell will still be strongly represented at the festival  as he owns leading Stan James Champion Hurdle contender Our Conor plus Terry Biddkecome National Hunt Chase anti-post favourite Foxrock and Golantilla, a 10-1 chance for the champion bumper. Connell's shock move in scratching The Tallow Tank emerged moments after the end of a hearing yesterday ay Carrick-on-Suir District Court in Tipperary.

"In the hearing, judge Terence Finn  agreed to a delay proposed by Fenton's representative, adjourning trhe high-profile case until March 20 to allow the defence to prepare submissions.

"John Ryan, junior council, acting on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, said he was in court seeking a hearing date and had 12 to 5 witnesses.

"Fenton, who also trains top-class pair Last Instalment and Dunguib , is charged with being in possession of prohibitive substances , including anabolic steroids, when his yard was visited by Department of Agriculture officials in January 2012.

"The BHA yesterday released a statement over the matter, which said they lacked information about the charges against Fenton.

"We are in contact with The Irish Turf Club with a view to gather as much information  as is currently available, " the statement said.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further or to speculate about this issue until we are in possession of the relevant facts. "

"This adds to earlier vocal support from the Gigginstown House Stud, Ireland's champion owner, which intends to run the Fenton trained Last Instalment  in the Betfred  Cheltenham Gold Cup. Stud owner Michael O'Leary one of Ireland's wealthiest businessmen, had expressed his faith in Fenton. "Philip is a personal friend and we support our friends when problems  arise. " he said.

"O'Leary's brother Eddy, Gigginstown's racing manager, added: "The assumption is that someone is innocent until proven guilty. Philip has assured us he is innocent and we believe him. "

"A second steroids case involving Irish Grand National -winning trainer  Pat Hughes has been adjourned until May 8. "
