There are a lot of
people who tell you they can ride. But few belong in the Equus Zone.
If you can't drive, you call a cab,
you sit in the back of that cab, whilst the driver, drives you to where you ask
to go.

Nick Godfrey brings news from Australia:
WE MEET UP AGAIN WITH CARLTON HOUSE
Can Carlton House win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday in Australia for
Our Queen at Royal Randwick Racecourse?
Can Carlton House win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday in Australia for
Our Queen at Royal Randwick Racecourse?
“Duke at Royal Randwick on Saturday?
“ONWARDS and upwards, and there are realistic hopes the Duke of Cambridge may
be inclined to drop in at Randwick
for day two of the Championships on his royal tour.
“In a sense he’s
been there already, as the prince’s disembodied
head was beamed around big
screens on Saturday when he officially named the new state-of-the-art,
grandstand, which is called the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stand.
“Royalty remains
important here. After all, the track’s official title is Royal Randwick,
granted dispensation in 1992, while Saturday’s showpiece is the Queen Elizabeth
Stakes, Originally named the Queen’s Plate in 1851 in honour of Queen Victoria and renamed following a 1954 royal visit to Australia .
“Worth A$500,000
(£280,000) in 2013, this race is now the
centrepiece of the Championships and worth a massive A$4m (about £2.22m.) And the favourite? Or old friend Carlton
House, who carries Her Majstesty’s colours into third in the British 2011 Derby and is still
carrying the Queen’s silks now, trained by Gai Waterhouse. No wonder they are
hoping William might show up: he probably couldn’t miss it even if he wanted
to. His grandmother might not be amused.
“Offer you can’t refuse
“GAI WATERHOUSE ,
meanwhile, was unusually quiet during
the four championship races on day one. It might not be the case on day two
after The Offer advertised his claims with an emotional Group 2 victory under
Tommy Berry , who was riding his first winner since the tragic death of twin
brother Nathan owing to a rare syndrome
related to epilepsy.
“The five-year-old
won the Naas October Handicap in 2012 for Aiden O’Brien, back in the days when
the horse was known simply As Offer.
“If we get
conditions like today and it really is a heavy track, these European horses
have such an advantage, “ said Australian racing’s leading lady, adding: “Just
back him – he’ll bolt in. “ Don’t say you weren't warned. Read Nicholas Godfrey’s Sydney blog at

THIS RACE A TEST
FOR LIKELY CLASSIC FILLIES
Did you notice in yesterday's (RP) what Jon Lees
had to say on page two ?
“ Stage is set for big clashes
to come with plenty still to play for.
“Don’t conclude
you’re Classic calculations until you’ve watched
the Craven meeting." Jon
Lees Warns. ...
“IN THE aftermath of Kingman’s
(colt) outstanding victory in the Greenham Stakes some have assumed the outcome of the
Qipco 2,000 Guineas is now a foregone conclusion.
“That would render the race after
which Newmarket ’s
season-opening- two-day fixture is titled a somewhat meaningless event that
would serve only to determine the identities and order of the horses who will
finish behind the Classic favourite on May 3.
"Whatever the betting market suggests, there is still plenty to play for. "
3 YEAR OLD COLTS CLASSIC 2.000 GUINEAS
3 YEAR OLD FILLIES CLASSIC 1.000 GUINEAS
“Sandiva disappointing on final start
last season, when 1m in soft might have been too much; bright start to 2 year
old career previously, when making it three wins from first four starts, with
Group 3 success at Deauville (7f good) in August, and this 1,000 Guineas entry
has leading form claims if picking up the thread and refinding that smart form.
