the decision to run champion two- year- old Toormore in a trial, with
connections fearing they could “ kiss the Guineas goodbye” if he contested the
Classic without a race under his belt.

Insurance Craven Stakes (3.05) as a
stepping stone to the Qipco 2,000 Guineas because of the confidence emanating
from Ballydoyle about the then 2-1

it is Kingman, yesterday likened
to a Ferrari by jockey James Doyle, who has taken the Classic market by
storm and is now the main reason Middleham Park
“Racing manager Tim Palin said “It’s
a good job we decided to run Toormore in the Craven because there’s no way we
could beat Kingman without a run.
“If he had a fitness advantage over
us we might as well kiss the Guineas
“I keep looking at the Greenham,
studying the form , looking for flaws and chinks in his armour. The thing that
impressed about his performance was that it just hits you in the eye. It was
almost faultless. He quickened twice, into the race to take the lead
and quickened away again.
“Doyle, speaking on At The Races,
said: Kingman did his job nicely. He’s got a superb turn of foot and a
fantastic cruising speed. He picked up instantly ; it’s like being in a
Ferrari. I don’t think a mile will be a
problem at all and, while he copes with ease in the ground , proper good ground
would be perfect.
“ He couldn’t have been more impressive,
but I don’t want to put pressure on the horse unnecessarily . There are big
targets ahead. “
