"Reward tracks that help racing says Jockey Club"

“THE Jockey Club has called for greater meritocracy within British racing and a formalisation of the relationship between the sport’s main stakeholders in its annual review  for 2014.

“As the group announced record turnover, operating profits and contribution to prize-money in 2013, the Jockey Club said incentivising acts for the good of racing, such as prize money contribution and promotion, would help grow the sport for all.

“Group chief executive Simon Bazalgette said yesterday “our view is we can go further in terms of how racecourses’ commercial business can be supported through things like fixtures and distribution of funding.

“If racecourses want to develop their fixture list and the funding they get from the sport then the structure should be around incentives so they can achieve that. But they achieve it by doing the right thing for the sport.

“Senior steward Nicholas Wrigley added:  “People make their own commercial decisions and do what they think is right. What we are saying is when people take different views you then make sure the structures are in place which rewards those who make the greatest contribution.

“Wrigley, who will be succeeded by Roger Weatherby when his five - year term as senior steward  ends in July said in his forward to the review it is “imperative” to formalise British racing’s  stakeholder structure.

"A previous plan by ex BHA chief executive Nic Coward for racecourses and the Horsemen’s Group to look after commercial matters while the BHA withdrew to a regulatory role stalled,  and has been subsequently reversed by his successor Paul Bittar.

“However, Bazalgetti said a formal arrangement between the three stakeholders should be introduced for matters like levy negotiations and fixtures.

“He added: “We think the overriding principle should be that the sport is a joint venture between stakeholders.  It should be structured on the base that the stakeholders will try to work together to make things happen and then set out what happens if some stakeholders don’t agree with certain things.

“Last year marked the fifth consecutive year of record group turnover and operating profits for the Jockey Club. Turnover increased  11 per cent to £166.9 million, while operating profits also rose  11 per cent, to £22m.

“The group contributed £18. 24m towards prize-money during 2013, with total purses at Jockey Club Racecourses reaching £41.6m. Both figures are set to rise again this year.

“Wrigley said:  “From the stewards’ point of view we’re pleased with the progress we’re making and the results the executive is delivering.

“They deliver what we see as our mission, which is to operate commercially  but generate money we can re-invest into the sport in the broadest sense – whether prize-money, new facilities or customer experience. “

“One of those investments is the £45m redevelopment at Cheltenmham and it will be partly funded from the Jockey Club’s retail bond, which raised nearly £25m last year.

“The group reduced its bank debt last year by £13.3m but its year-end total debt position increased by £10.9m to £97.1m, reflecting the addition of the bond.

“Bazalgette said he expected the debt position to “tick-up” before reducing again after the Cheltenham redevelopment is finished in 2016. Both figures are set to rise again this year.

“We’ve gone through a huge exercise with the banks to make sure everyone is very comfortable. “ he added. “We spent a lot of time making sure if unforeseen  things do happen we’ll still be able to manage our bank debt position. “

THE TRUE PERSPECTIVE OF BRITISH HORSERACING IN CONTEXT AT PRESENT APRIL 2014
TimeLine Zone
1711 .... 2014

Who are the three stakeholders stated to be the owners of British horseracing  in this feature?

THERE is a whole world of difference between owning a racecourse and owning British horseracing.

The problem is between 1711 and 2014 British horseracing has fallen into the wrong hands. Fallen into the hands of the highly dangerous bloodhorse Illiterate.

2014 Queen Elizabeth 11 owns Royal Ascot racecourse now
