BIG RACE NEWS

“Cumani: sport has to unite over rules. “
“LUCA CUMANI has again apologised for the delay to Saturday’s Darley Irish
Oaks caused by his runner in the race Volume wearing shoes deemed illegal for
racing in Ireland, but he has urged the authorities to come together to install
uniform rules across all jurisdictions on such matters.
“The Curragh Classic was delayed by 21 minutes after Cumani was forced
to replace the ‘trailer’ shoes Volume was wearing with more conventional
footwear that complied with Turf Club regulations, despite Volume racing in the
modified shoes in all her six races in Britain.
“I apologise for the delay,” said Cumani. “I heard the delay was unfair
on the others, but she was involved in as much kerfuffle and she was just as
inconvenienced . “
“Calling for harmonisation of the rules, Cumani added: “In football you can have an Italian team
play a German team with a French referee and everyone knows what the rules are.
It’s the same with any sport but racing still has this strange phenomenon with
different countries and different rules and little unknown rules.
“She was wearing shoes known as trailers and they are regularly used on
horses it training in England and you can race in them as well. Going to
Ireland is just the same for me as going to York and you don’t think it would
be that different. “
“Shropshire trainer Tim Pitt, who saddled a winner at the Curragh
yesterday, said he too was unaware of the ruling but thinks responsibility
still lies with trainers if they choose to use anything other than the standard
racing equipment
“Pitt said: “If I was going to run a horse in anything other than
standard aluminium plates somewhere different I would have the foresight to
check they were allowed there. “
“The BHA confirmed it would be speaking with its counterparts at the
Turf Club in the near future regarding Saturday’s incident. “
