FONTWELL TODAY

By David Milnes

Prescott’s ‘OAP outing’ as he visits track for first time in half a century with rare bumper runner.

Including a photograph of what looks like a smart young rider in the saddle with strapline that reads “ Sir Mark Prescott and Propellant Miss are led in by trainer Cecil Stone after their win at Fontwell in 1966. "

“The Newmarket trainer is set to run the well-bred Sea The Stars filly Sea Pride in the bumper at Fontwell this afternoon, an extremely rare jumps runner for her trainer.

The four- year- old –filly is bred to be smart on the Flat as she is out of the useful Claxton and a half sister to two black-type winners, but she faces her first test in the West Sussex track’s 1m6f (Flat) bumper. (4.50)

“Prescott said: “Sea Pride is an enormous great filly, she wasn’t broken until she was three. We couldn’t run her last season on the Flat as she was so backward. She’s now coming to hand and is ready to run but I don’t know how good you have to be to win a bumper, and I see Mr (Nicky) Henderson has two entries. “
“Win, loose or draw this afternoon, Prescott is looking forward to revisiting the track. He said “I have not been to Fontwell since 1966, when I rode a winner. It’s exciting as I have fond memories of the place. It will be interesting to see if it has changed much and the whole day is turning into a bit of a OAP outing as Val Griffiths, who is racing manager to the owner, is going and she has not been there since the 1970’s.”
“Prescott’s previous four runners in bumpers, dating to the start of the Racing Post website in the late 1980’s, all started favourite-and all were beaten, the latest behind leading Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup fancy Many Clouds.

California heading to World Cup

"CALIFORNIA CHROME, the US Horse of the Year, will make his next start in the Dubai World Cup on March 28 after his comeback defeat at Santa  Anita on Saturday, where he was beaten a length and a half into second by Shared Belief in a memorable clash for the San Antonio Stakes.

"He's going to Dubai, " said Art Sherman, trainer of last year's Kentucky Derby hero. "The horse came out of the race well and ate up good. I'll be there two weeks before the race - I want him to get acclimatised on the track and train on it.

"We'll see how the track there is playing . We can see what the competition is. It will be a whole new experience."

"Shared Belief, who took his record to nine wins from ten starts in Saturday's $500,000 contest, will stay at home for the Santa Anita Handicap on March 7. "
