“Nicholas Godfrey looks at the British trainers
making cross-Channel raids and capitalising on better levels of prize-money in
lower-class races. “
Robert Eddery: “I hate going to Lingfield and picking up just
£1,800, if you win.”
Harry Dunlop “Sometimes
it can be frustrating over here – you can run very well in a 0-85 or 0-90 and
come home with £1,500 for finishing second. In France the place money’s good,
especially when you add the premium on top’.”

“THE ROAD TO PORNICHET-LA- BAULE
“If you win 10, thousand Euros’ it
can be another 8, thousand Euros’ on top’.
“NEWMARKET trainer Robert Eddery enjoyed one
of the most memorable episodes of his career in February 2014 when he took the
road less travelled with a pair of maidens to windswept Pornichet-La-Baule a
racecourse near the coast in the Loire-Atlantique department of south-western
France”

SAMMY JO BELL (GB)
"Time
will show how significant Bell’s day really was."
“
Bell, apprentice to Richard Fahey, "Sammy Jo
Bell, rides a couple of winners en route to a famous triumph in the Silver
Saddle competition for top jockey award at Shergar Cup.
“Bell
may have been earning positive reviews in the north but the Shergar Cup showcased
her skills to a much wider audience, making her a star almost overnight. Just how
much it meant to her, and her two teammates was glaringly obvious. Yet without
wishing to poor any cold water on a fine achievement, we won’t know for some
time whether anything longer term comes of her success, or whether this is just
her Warholian 15 minutes.
“Either
way, female riders have been much in the news in the last couple of weeks. Carlisle hosted its annual all-female meeting,
while Ayr just had a woman- only race on its ladies’ night card. All good news
but a drop in the ocean in the wider context. "

Bloodhorse Literate
Achievers:
JMC: How wide - deep is the gulf
between the bloodhorse literate achievers, and the rest of the human race? Can such a huge difference ever be breached one is left to wonder ...
Close on 50 years have passed since the British male domain of
horseracing gave way to allow the female of the species to take part. Many racehorses in training, and in competition respond kindly
to the female touch of gentleness.
It could be said that British female
trainers have achieved more in the last 50 years, than female jockeys.

A LATE replacement for the injured
Cathy Gannon on The Girls team, Sammy Jo Bell not only led her
team to a historic first Shergar Cup title but also became ..
NG: "Time will show how significant
Bell’s day really was. Maybe it is time for a bit of positive discrimination to
help female riders’ .
NG: THE DAY CATHY GANNON'S LUCK RAN OUT, YET AGAIN.
“AS TOUGH as they come, Cathy Gannon seldom asks for anybody’s
sympathy. I can’t help feeling sorry for her, though because no sooner does she
fight her way back from a long-term shoulder injury than she breaks a collarbone.
Given she was back in the winning groove
after a slowish start following a 16-month layoff, the timing could hardly have
been worse – and that’s even before her absence from the Dubai Duty-Free
Shergar Cup is taken into consideration.
“Not only did Gannon miss out on five rides at Ascot- a rarity
in itself for any female jockey – but she had to sit and watch her teammates
claim the title, and her replacement, the apprentice Sammy Jo Bell, ride two
winners en route to a famous triumph in the Silver Saddle competition for top
jockey.
“Bell may have been earning positive reviews in the north but
the Shergar Cup showcased her skills to a much wider audience, making her a
star almost overnight. “
