“ WHAT a dude of a
horse! Bill. Belgian Bill. He’s taken us on many a road trip over the years and
now for the first time he’s on American soil for Saturday’s Arlington Million,
along with my invaluable and indispensable assistant Patrick Murphy.
“I was told at an early
age “if you surround yourself with the right people, you’ll give yourself half
a chance” . And without Patrick and his wife Valarie at my side, not to mention
the very long suffering Mrs Baker, this ship of ours would have lurched into
deep and uncharted water a long time ago.
“We got Bill by
mistake. Led out of Tattersalls unsold, David and Angie Loder liked him, I did not.
But what do I know?
“And so he was loaded
on to the lorry, along with his mate Jack’s Revenge, and this mad adventure was
kick-started. I was called the “ambulance driver” as I headed out of Newmarket
with two waifs who nobody else wanted.
“Bill won’t win the
Arlington Million. But he was never going to win a Hunt Cup! Or win in Dubai.
When I checked last night, he was not in the betting, which made me a little nervous, fearing I had missed some
declaration deadline. I had not. And we will give it a proper Joe Root
style swing of the bat, and enjoy every moment. This sport of ours is, after
all meant to be fun. ”
