MARTIN DWYER The entertaining jockey on his escape from Mumbai in a great Alastair Down interview. (p10)

 

Alastair Down meets the Derby-winning jockey who has kept his sense of humour despite a frightening experience in India.

 

"I ended up locked in a room, every window was smashed and I'm thinking this is rock'n'roll, I'm getting stoned'

 

"The last thing anyone wants to hear a jockey moaning and whining. I'm always telling the kids not to whine so I'm not going to'

"IN THE winter if you need a jockey to make you laugh you haul Mattie Batchelor out of the weighing room, but the wit of choice in the summer months can only be Martin Dwyer, the unreconstructed Scouser with a Derby and Oaks to his credit and a man who has ridden Group 1 winners on four continents.

 

"This season has been a stuttering slow burn for Dwyer with just seven winners so far and, more worrying, his appeal against a now infamous 56-day ban incurred in India in February is still clanking its snail- like way through the endless bureaurocracy of that jurisdiction's judicial system. Dwyer has two young kids - he could be a grandfather by the time the whole business is finally sorted out .....
