GRAHAM GREEN THE APPRENTICES

SPECIAL REPORT   APPRENTICE JOCKEYS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

“MARTIN HARLEY has been installed as 2-1 favourite by Paddy Power and as short as 11-8 with Ladbrokes to win this season’s apprentice championship in what promises to be the most exciting title battle in years.

“With seven weeks of the (Flat) campaign remaining, HARLEY has already equalled the 41 winners amassed by 2010 champion MARTIN LANE, but is just two in front of KIERAN  O’NEILL (5-2) with both HARRY  BENTLEY (3-1) and JAMES SULLIVAN (5-1) also in the shake-up on 38 apiece.

“Although all four rivals are determined to pull out all the stops, HARLEY’S ambitions take on sky-high proportions tomorrow when he is chartering an aircraft in order to ride at both Ayr and the evening meeting at Wolverhampton.

“It will be the first time the 22-year old has flown between racecourses, let alone forked out for his own plane, but while running the risk of being out of pocket despite nine mounts across the two fixtures, he will consider the £500- £600 money well spent if managing to put more daylight between himself and his pursuers.

“HARLEY, has joined West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon earlier this year from his native Ireland where he worked with Jim Bolger, and only needs another six successes to loose his claim, said “Things are going well, I’ve got a good boss behind me, and it’s much better being two in front that 11 behind. There is still along way to go and there are good lads breathing down my neck, but you’ve got to keep going when you’re in front …..
