DAVID ASHFORTH  “RAKTI owner Tanaka pays tribute to ‘true gentleman’ Jarvis.
“RACEHORSE owner Gary Tanaka has paid tribute to Michael Jarvis, who lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday aged 73.  Jarvis trained the mighty RAKTI for Tanaka, who joined Jarvis as a four year old having been trained in Italy and in his care won the 2003 Champion Stakes and 2004 Prince of Wales Stakes over 1m2f. He proved equally adept when dropped back to a mile by adding the 2004 Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes to his haul, when he was also crowned joint-champion miler.

Tanaka “It was a great honour and privilege to have shared many memorable moments with Michael. He was ideally suited to mastermind our overseas forays. RAKTI was testament to Michael’s patient and steady handling of  a talented but quirky short-fused performer. Michael had the inspired presence to shorten RAKTI in distance twice to capture major tests at one and a quarter miles and at one mile after he had demonstrated no lack of stamina in winning the Italian Derby. Thank you, Michael. You were a true gentleman and consummate horseman. We will never forget the quiet, confident demeanour in your reassuring presence, added Tanaka.

“Trainer Charlie Hills labelled Jarvis a ‘true legend’, tweeting :”Incredible sad news to hear of the passing of a true legend Michael Jarvis. Condolences go to all his family  and Roger Varian .”

J MARGARET CLARKE TURFCALL Memories of  Michael Jarvis working with Gordon Smyth in the shadow of the grim Lewis prison, a quiet caring young man, who tended the horses in his care with respect and true understanding.
