Trainers'
prize-money protest leads to walkover
By Jon Lees 6:32AM 11 July 2012
"TRAINERS have withdrawn all bar one runner from the
final race at Worcester
on Wednesday night in protest against poor prize-money.
"Top jumps trainers including Nicky Henderson,
Philip Hobbs, Jonjo O'Neill, Donald McCain, Alan King and David Pipe are among
those committed to supporting the boycott in an attempt to draw attention to
what they claim are unacceptable prize-money levels.
BHA
in threat to take action over boycott
Lee

"THE
BHA last night sent out a thinly veiled warning to trainers as the sport's
governing body let it be known that it would consider taking further
disciplinary action against the Charlie Mann-led group whose boycott action
resulted in yesterday's final race at Worcester
being reduced to a walkover.
"Mann's
efforts to make the Worcester's race meaningless bore fruit as nine
trainers-including Nicky Henderson, Jonjo O'Neill, Philip Hobbs, Alan King and
Donald McCain - joined him in withdrawing their declared runners from a novice
hurdle whose £3,000 prize-money fell £900 short of the Horsemen's Group
tariff.
"Buoyed by the plot's success, Mann pledged to consider a
similar move next week to persuade the Northern and Arena Racing Group that owns
Worcester
against staging further races below tariff.
"As Mann had forecast, only one horse - the Nigel Twiston
Davies-trained MOULIN DE LA CROIX - was left in the Partex Marketing
Systems-sponsored contest. Part of the £3,000 prize-money earned by the sole
starter will be shared by the ten trainers and used to pay their mandatory £140
fines. Mann said the remaining money would be donated to the Injured Jockey's
Fund.
