FESTIVAL PREVIEW NIGHT HILTON HOTEL
Tuesday February 26th 2013
"Wark
walks the walk as panellists talk the talk
Ben Hutton in Glasgow
"Ladies
and gentlemen, we have the finest Cheltenham Festival preview panel ever
assembled!
"So
host Nick Luck welcomes the 600 Glasgow Hilton attendees on Tuesday for an
evening in support of Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres and St
Andrews ' Hospice, the first Cheltenham preview of its type in Scotland .
"Nick
certainly isn't overstating the panel members either, because among those
looking down on the 60 circular tables laid out for a three-course meal are
Barry Geraghty, Charlie Swan, Nicky Henderson, Lucinda Russell, Tony McCoy and Arthur Moore.
"They
all get the rousing introductions and acknowledgements they deserve and, if
Lucinda Russell's festival achievements have yet to match those of her panel
contemporaries you wouldn't have guessed
it, as the loudest roar of appreciation is sent in the direction of the
Scottish trainer.
"The
interactive silent auction is thoroughly good fun, with each table hosting an iPad through which to bid and the four big
screens detailing how much everything is going for and who to. One wag bids for
a round of golf in the name of Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark. Hang on a
minute, it is Newsnight Kirsty Wark! The patron of Maggie's reveals that she
used to go racing at Windsor every Monday night
during the 1980's, and addresses the crowd , concluding:"Glasgow has never seen anything like this,
it's going to be an extraordinary night!
"And
so it is. With two hours left to go in the silent auction the bids for the 23
lots already amount to £13,500.
"Henderson , asked if
Simonsig would be in the top five horses he has ever trained, replies in the
affirmative, adding "He's got a huge amount of speed, buckets of it".
"Following
dinner, Luck begins proceedings just as all things Cheltenham
should, with the Supreme Novices' Hurdle. There aren't many negatives about My
Tent Or Yours, other than Henderson
pointing out that he needs to prove he's as good on an undulating track as he is on a flat course, adding that
"River Maigue isn't incapable"
"Geraghty
says of Grandouet in the Champion Hurdle: "His form ties in with Zarkandar
but I'd like to think we'd beat him," while Henderson has a sneaky feeling Binocular is
coming back to his best. He's also got the same inkling regarding Riverside Theatre,
and reports Captain Coonan had worked brilliantly that morning. The Jewson is
the probable race for him, although Henderson
says Dynaste would scare him if switching from the RSA.
"The RSA Chase. The panel discuss the
desperate record of Feltham winners but AP has some soothing words for fans of
Dynaste: "He's a completely different horse to Grands Crus, who was very
free. Dynste is much more relaxed."
"The
Champion Chase is given little air time with nobody willing to oppose Sprinter
Sacre, but Oskar Whisky has a few fans on the pane for the World Hurdle, with
Henderson saying: "I don't think it was the real Oscar Whisky last year and
without Big Buck's we've got to try again."
