DAVID ASHFORTH
Saturday's musings from a retired racing enthusiast.

David Ashforth at the Derby Awards 6.12.10

DAVID'S SATURDAY MUSINGS
10.02.2013

"Fun, laughter and swearing make up for lack of profit."

Pic: "Crowd pleasers: (from left to right) Henry de Bromhead, John Francome, Davy Russell, handicapper Noel O'Brien, bookmaker Justine Carty and Mike Cattermole share a joke at a preview night in Waterford."

"SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Oh, no, that's autumn. Season of flu (I write from my dressing gown) and Cheltenham Festival previews. They're coming up. If you've never been to one, you should - they're good fun.

"The event I remember best took place in the ballroom of the Glencarn Hotel in Castleblayney, County Monaghan, four years ago, when the one and only Oliver Brady, during a virtuoso performance, introduced Pablo, the winner of the 2003 Lincoln, on to the dance floor. Brady also told some very funny stories and had a priest on hand to forgive him for swearing. A lot of forgiveness was required.

"The priest, Father Hughes, would have come in handy at Towcester, the  scene of notably lively previews, fuelled by pundit and punter Mark Winstanley. Entertaining though they are, it's probably best  not to take your maiden aunt with you, if maiden aunts still exist. I think they may have died out. Anyway, Winstanley's jokes, rarely in good taste but often funny, have been known to include Bangkok  brothels and Fred West, but I liked his response when a panelist criticised 2008 Champion Hurdle contender Sizing Europe's tendency to jump big. "Well" retorted Winstanley, "I'd rather see him jump big than lie on his arse looking at the stars."

"Strong opinions, strongly expressed, help previews along and, characteristically , it was Matt Chapman who condemned that year's Arkle Chase as "an awful race that should have been run at Catterick", The winner, Tidal Bay, turned out quite well but looking at the subsequent fate of the others, Chapman had a point.

"Panelists regularly have points, although some of them can be difficult to grasp - witness former jockey and current pundit Colin Brown's defence of 2007 Royal & SunAlliance Chase candidate Cailin Alainn: "She's done nothing much wrong," said Brown, "apart from fall" - which was what she did on the day. The following year, assessing Air Force One's prospects in the same race, trainer Seamus Mullins observed that Charlie Mann's chaser had also "done little wrong." before pausing and adding: "He hasn't really done anything right, either."
"If you do get bored, it can be interesting counting the number of times panelists use the expression "he's done nothing wrong,"  "he's a machine", "he's got an engine" and "I couldn't have him on my mind".  As well as a pen, you'll need quite a large piece of paper.

"Brown was speaking at East Garston village hall, a homely venue with seats that Victorian bottoms would recognise. It's probably best to take a cushion but, assuming a preview's still there, it's always an enjoyable one even though, one year, the end of the preview coincided with the arrival of trainer Stan Moore, one of the panelists.

"Panels with panelists who spark off each other are best , which makes jockey Davy Russell and trainer Tony Mullins good company, if prone to fits of giggling. All the previews in Ireland I've been to  have been enjoyable, which may explain why British panelists are often tempted to appear, including John Francome. I see he's at the Woodland Hotel in Waterford again this year. It was there, four years ago, that Nick Luck remarked that French jockey Christophe Pieux, due to ride the odds-on favourite Kasbah Bliss in the World Hurdle, was "the most frightening  man I've ever seen" "You haven't been to Swindon," said Francome. Big Buck's won, at 6-1.

"They have enormous crowds at some previews, such as the ones at Belfast's Europa Hotel, where I discovered a panelist able to speak as fast as Lydia Hislop and Steve Mellish did at the Midlands' Racing Club's splendid preview at the Barn Social Club's, near Birmingham. It was a remarkable feat, accomplished by Ronan Graham, of bookmaking firm Sean Graham, although I was even more struck by another Irish bookmaker, Paul Ryan of Paddy Power, at the Cheltenham &  Three Counties Race Club preview, where panelists perched on stools on the racecourse's Centaur stage. When Paul Carberry was criticized for his riding of the frustrating Harchibald in the 2007 Christmas Hurdle at Kempton, Ryan leapt to his defence. "He's a jockey, not a bloody psychiatrist."

"The roll might suit Andy Clifton,  Cheltenham's communications director, who fancied Denman to win the 2007 Royal & SunAlliance Chase on the basis that, when visiting Paul Nicholls' yard, Denman had dribbled on his shounder. It was a good choice and it's a pitty Denman wasn't sick over him, or Clifton might have doubled his bet.

"On the whole, that would be an unwise response to panelists' selections (double your bet not being sick over them). Having compared a large sample of selections with a similarly large sample of results, there is the danger of a large deficit. Best to just go along for the ride."

DAVID has clearly enjoyed adventuring into the Cheltenham Festival Preview Evenings.
Info herewith, and  more to follow later. Wondering why  Flat Turf racemeetings don't appear to follow suit in this popular guiding environment.

WONDERING ABOUT BRITISH TURF FLAT RACING FOLLOWING SUIT?

MAKE BELIEVE PERHAPS, IF GEORGE WASHINGTON HAD BEEN THE TOPIC FOR PANALISTS PRE BRITISH 2000 GUINEAS WHICH HE WON SATURDAY MAY 6 2006 ...

George Washington (January 3, 2003 – October 27, 2007) was a thoroughbred racehorse foaled in Ireland by champion sire Danehill out of Bordighera, also the dam of the high-class colt Grandera. Bred by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, he was trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O'Brien and owned by Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith. George Washington suffered a dislocated ankle fracture [2] during the Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park on October 27, 2007, and was euthanized. The horse was nicknamed 'Gorgeous George' by his followers.

GEORGE WASHINGTON

GORGEOUS GEORGE
 we all called him

JMC: GORGEOUS GEORGE liked to check out the environment he found himself in when arriving on a racecourse .....  from the moment the horse box ramp came down and he stepped out on to racecourse turf it was like he became spellbound. It was no use attempting to hussle or bussle him along in any way. He needed to get his own head around the different environment  he found himself in first, to make sure that he felt safe  before he would venture where he was being asked to go.

Bloodhorse Literate Clare Balding and Kelly Marks working together picked up on this live on televised racing, they were able together to talk their TV audience through things from
GORGEOUS GEORGE's perspective. Clare and Kelly were spot on,  acurately, finely in-tune exactly with GORGEOUS GEORGE's needs, and rights within his own true perspective.
