DESSIE HUGHES
 1943-2014
RICHARD HUGHES last night spoke of a week of “lovely times” the Hughes family spent together before his father Dessie’s death at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.

“Writing in his Racing Post column last month, Hughes dedicated his third jockey’s championship to his father, saying he had vowed to do everything he could to defend his title for him.

“He said his father had tutored and advised him from the age of seven and had been instrumental in his becoming champion jockey.

“Hughes said yesterday:  “We were called last Sunday and told to get over as soon as possible, but rather than go quickly, Dad lived on another week.

“I’m so glad we had that week. It was very special. The whole family were together and we had some lovely times. It was actually a bit like having one last holiday together, and the nursing staff at St Vincent’s looked after him brilliantly. They are angels.

“Dad was absolutely devoted to my mother and it was wonderful we were all there to go through that together.”
