Courses will be remeasured after Wetherby farce

By Jon Lees

ALL British jumps tracks will be remeasured by the government (BHA) after it emerged Wetherby’s biggest race of the year has been run over the wrong distance for five years. See pages 1 and 8.

Mulholland hits out after The Young Master is stripped of Badger victory.

Jon Lees brings news
As published in the Racing Post on Friday November 14.page 10 NEWS

“TRAINER Neil Mulholland yesterday hit out at the system that led to the Young Master being stripped of his victory in the Gadger Ales Trophy when a BHA disciplinary panel disqualified the horse because he was not qualified to take part.

A computer error at Wetherbys was blamed for the failure to pick up the ineligibility, but the panel found under the rules it was Mulholland’s responsibility to check the conditions that require to check the conditions of last Saturday’s Wincanton race. I bet they did.

“The £34,000 first prize was awarded to the eight-length runner- up Court By Surprise following a successful BHA objection to the race result on the grounds The Young Master had not met conditions that required the horse to have run three times over fences.

“Mulholland received a £250 fine, below the recommended entry point, for what the panel deemed  “an unfortunate sequence of events” and in a second blow the trainer learned the BHA would take account of the performance and enforce a 14lb rise. However, on a positive note for Mulholland, the run has been treated as a third chase outing, qualifying him for other Class 1 races.

“Mulholland, while accepting his responsibility for the horse’s entry, said: “Weatherbys have a big part in this. They are reimbursing my owner his costs and are holding their hands up. There were 1,500 not- qualified horses entered last year, which averaged out at 27 a week. You can’t take that fact away.
“I feel I’ve been very unlucky that it was my horse who happened to slip through the system Wetherby’s had a brand new system put in at the end of September and their system failed. Weatherby’s have admitted it’s a big computer failure and we’re very disappointed the horse has been left with a 14lb penalty.

“This is not something I went out to do on purpose. I understand the rules and they are there to be obeyed but unfortunately my horse was the one who slipped through the system  and the system is taking none of the blame for it.

“They {Weatherbys} weren’t at the hearing today. If they did nothing wrong why are they paying for the owner’s expenses? It is what it is and we will have to get on with it.

“The disqualification of The Young Master became inevitable once it emerged the novice was not qualified to take part in the Wincanton race.

The panel expressed “Some Sympathy” for Mulholland who produced evidence  to show at some points of the entry cycle the novice exclusion  does not appear in the conditions of the race on the racing administration website, which was acknowledged  by the BHA..

“Ruth Quinn, BHA director of racing, said:”Weatherbys has an IT system which is designed to alert trainers when they have entered a horse that is not qualified. While this does not override the trainers responsibility under the rules, it is a service which the BHA, via Weatherbys, provides to the industry and it is clear that service did not work as it should have done on this occasion

“Not only is this a service designed to assist trainers, but it is also part of our collective responsibilities to connections of horses and punters to ensure incidences such as this do not occur. The outcome of Saturday’s race is simply not satisfactory for the betting public.

“”We are satisfied with the explanation provided by Weatherbys  and that the coding error on the administration system has now been fixed. It is importaint such an incident does not occur again. We also support Weatherby’s decision to compensate the owner for the cost of the entry fee and race day expenses.

What about compensating the trainer for all the inconvenience placed upon him …

“Seperately, the BHA has made a decision to reassess The Young Master’s handicap mark based on the evidence of the Badger Ales Trophy. We have a duty to the sport as a whole, including punters and other horsemen, and that duty is not played out by not taking account of the form from Saturday’s race.

“We appreciate this may be seen as a hard line by some, but we are confident that is best intersts of the sport it is correct decision.

“It is borne out by other precedents of horses being disqualified  - for example for taking the wrong course-for example-then being reassessed off the back of these performances. “
 more later Sunday.
