TOP PROFESSIONAL HORSEMAN MICHAEL CURRAN Curran a True Bloodhorse Literate achiever in his own right..
"Michael Curran the same horseman who worked with the colt Kingman
for Gosden as a two year old in 2013, and throughout 2014 as a three
year old . Michael told Nicholas: “He was phenomenal, because he never won by
far, he probably never got the recognition he should have done. But when he
galloped he showed how good he was. Golden Horn is similar. They don’t always
show you how good they are. When I was at Barry Hill’s a few years ago we had Distant
Relative and if you gave somebody the leg up on him and didn’t tell them who he
was, they wouldn’t think he was much good. Some horses don’t overdo themselves,
Golden Horn is very straight forward, when cantering, and in his work, he knows
his job and gets on with it, again the same could be said of Kingman. “
“Michael Curren with no family background
in racing. Curren slid into the sport as
a career option after getting involved
in Borders common ridings and festivals. “I had riding lessons and wanted to
work with horses, and because I was so small it was suggested at school I went
into racing, “ he said. “I went to work with Harry Bell at Hawick. You learned
the hard way there.
“After that came a spell with Hills, latterly
at Manton he worked with top sprinter Handsome Sailor, whom he described as an “Old
gentleman, an old pro”. Just slightly
too heavy, Curran had a brief apprentice
career that lasted precisely two rides; later he was employed by his friend
Darryl Holland as a driver and then had an initial period with Gosden at Stanley
House in the days of Benny The Dip.
“More driving followed, for a family
courier firm when he was based in Bishop’s Stortford as he left the sport for a
period; he has been back with Gosden at Clarehaven for about seven years now, arriving
at work well before 5am every morning.
BRITISH EPSOM DERBY DAY SATURDAY JUNE 6, 2015
Curran “ Golden Horn’s emphatic win in the
Dante Derby trial at York on Thursday May
14 ensured he would be competing for the
British Derby at Epsom on Saturday June 6.
Before the Dante he did a really nice bit of work recalls Curran. He needed a
wake- up call, and that was it. The way he won the Dante Trial you couldn’t not
go to the Derby; he was going away at the end.
“On Derby Day Curran said: “You know you are
favourite but nothing’s ever a one horse race and you always respect the other horses,
he says. “Of course there were nerves. I admit when our second horse [Jack Hobbs] went
clear I did worry we were a little bit too far back. But once he got into top
gear he was just eating up ground.”
“Although Curran says the Derby was the pinnacle”,
he was moved even more by the reception of the Irish crowd after Golden Horn’s controversial triumph in
the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown . For the sport the Derby was
the one, but for crowd appreciation Ireland was the best, “ he says. “Maybe we
shouldn’t have done so with the inquiry but we put the winner’s rug on him and
everybody cheered.
“In the Leopardstown winner’s enclosure your
right near the crowd and, when the result came through, me and the horse were
looking the other way. I turned him round and the cheering was phenomenal; I was punching the air in delight. They really
do love their horses and racing; it was how I’d imagine Cheltenham must be if
you have a winner.”
“Curran claims he was not overly worried the
race may be lost in the Stewards room
after Golden Horn veered out and bumped
Free Eagle. I suppose it helped that the other horse came third, but all the
jockeys were out watching it, so I asked them what they thought and they said
they thought he’d keep it.
“I’ve seen it happen before with other horses
– I think he just saw a photographer lying on the floor or something,” he adds “I
was just hoping everything was okay with the horse. I could see that he was
galloping alright so that was a relief. “
“Not
so ideal was the Juddmonte
International as Golden Horn suffered
his sole career defeat to 50-1 shot
Arabian Queen. “These things happen – nothing’s ever picture perfect” , says
Curran.
“What, then are the chances of a
picture-perfect result at Longchamp on Sunday? “It’s never an easy race to win
and you’ve got horses like Treve, New Bay, Jack Hobbs ….” he says. Obviously
you’ve got to respect the mare – she loves Longchamp. But if it’s decent ground
we’ll go there with a good chance.”
