 EQUUS ZONE
“MONBEG DUDE yesterday had a royal appointment entered into his diary after London 2012 eventing silver medallist ZARA PHILLIPS (Equus Zone) ( Group 1) was put forward as the person to tackle the jumping frailties that will stop Saturday’s Coral Welsh National winner (5.1.2013) being handed an Aintree assignment in April.

“Success under PAUL CARBERRY (Equus Zone) ( Group 1) in the Chepstow marathon came despite a series of jolting blunders, including three in succession early in the race, a serious error at the final ditch and a mistake at the last fence, all of which combined to make the eight year old’s victory all the more remarkable.

“However, while trainer Michael Scudamore has resolved to deal with the problem, he believes this season’s John Smith’s Grand National will come too soon for the gelding, whose trio of rugby-playing part-owners include Mike Tindall, husband of distinguished Olympian ZARA PHILLIPS, the Queen’s granddaughter.

“Scudamore, now eying Haydock Park’s Betfred Grand National Trial on February 16, yesterday confirmed MONBEG DUDE to be in great shape, his jumping was the problem and cause for concern after Saturday's win,  further jumping guidance is on the agenda before he competes over fences again in public.

“The 28-year-old-trainer said: “I thought he made only one mistake when he won the time before at Cheltenham and JAMIE MOORE  blamed himself before that, but there were too many mistakes at Chepstow to ignore, so he is probably going to spend a few days with ZARA PHILLIPS (Equus Zone) ( Group 1)  .

“Mike(Tindall) spoke with ZARA after the race and she thinks there are things she can do to improve his jumping. Sending problem jumpers to people connected with eventing seems to be the fashionable thing and, in the circumstances , ZARA should be cheaper than YOGI BREISNER (Equus Zone) (Group 1)

When I spoke to Dad (former champion jockey Peter Scudamore)  (Equus Zone) (Group 1)
he made the point that horses don’t make as many mistakes as he made and still win a big race, so you have to think that if he can brush up his jumping there will be plenty more improvement in him. In his defence, that was only his sixth start over fences, and in many ways he is still a novice, but he did also benefit from an absolute masterclass of a ride.”

“Scudamore added “Given the way he jumped at Chepstow, the Grand National would almost certainly come too soon, so I think we will resist the temptation even to enter. He is only eight and has plenty of time to run in a Grand National.

“Before Saturday we had been thinking that if everything went well the race we would target would be the Grand National trial at Haydock Park. He has five weeks until that, which should be enough, and it looks like a nice target for him.”

“The Haydock contest was last season won by GILES CROSS, who is likely to make his Lancashire return next month after being pulled up in the Welsh National,  the third time in the last four seasons that has been the outcome on his seasonal debut.

“Trainer Victor Dartnall, who on Saturday saddled his first winner since being forced to temporarily close down his operation due to a bout of equine herpes, said ”He is absolutely fine. For a first run it was pretty good and if you look at some of his past reappearances he has often gone like that.  DENIS O’REGAN was right to pull up, as if  he hadn’t the horse would have finished very tired.

“I’m hoping the handicapper will drop him a little as he was 6lb higher than at Haydock on Saturday. He’ll go for all the normal races, Haydock included, but I don’t think we’ll go for the Eider, as he finished at a walk there two years ago and it probably exceeds his stamina limit.”  Victor Dartnall interviewed on the debut C4 Morning Line on Saturday.
