Queen Mother Champion Chase Background

"The Queen Mother Champion Chase is undoubtedly the highlight of the second day's racing and one of the highlights of the entire Festival. The race was originally known as the National Hunt Two Mile Champion Chase before changing to its current title in 1980 to mark the 80th birthday of the Queen Mother.

"The race involves a distance of 2 miles with 12 fences to be jumped and is open to horses aged five and over. It is the most prestigious minimum distance chase in national hunt racing and involves a prize purse of £320,000.

"Tom Dreaper is the leading trainer with six wins during the 60s and 70s, although current champion trainer Paul Nicholls can lay claim to four winners including the 2008 and 2009 winner Master Minded. It is Badsworth Boy who leads the most wins for a horse after consecutive successes in 1983, 1984 and 1985."
