RACING TO TURN OUT IN RESPECT FOR McCAIN TRIBUTE
“RACING personalities from across Britain and Ireland will be out
this afternoon when a service to celebrate the life and times of
Ginger McCain is held at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral
writes Graham Green.
“The service, which is being conducted by the acting Dean, Canon
Myles Davies and starts at 2.30pm, is expected to draw a congregation
of around 1,000.
“There will be two addresses, one by McCain’s close friend and
former racecourse commentator Jonathan Turner and the other
by TV racing pundit and former jockey Richard Pitman. The two readings
are being delivered by Ladbrokes PR chief Mike Dillon and Ascot chief
executive Charles Barnett.
“McCain, who died in September at the age of 80, was a unique character
who’s fame transcended the sport and became a household name through
winning the Grand National three times with RED RUM IN 1973, 1974 AND 1977.
He went on to win the race again in 2004 with AMBERLEIGH HOUSE - making him one of only two trainers to record four victories in the world’s greatest steeplechase – before retiring two years later.
