IN YESTERDAY'S RACING POST MONDAY NOVEMBER 7TH 2011
HEADLINES READ AS FOLLOWS:

ANDREW KING "DEJECTED MCCOY HITS OUT  AFTER FIRST WHIP BAN "
TONY Mc COY yesterday joined RUBY WALSH in predicting a ‘long hard winter’ for jump jockeys after incurring his first whip ban under the controversial new rules.

“The 16-time champion was handed a five-day ban after hitting CADDIE MASTER, the short- head runner-up to FRONTIER DANCER in the 3m handicap hurdle at  Ffos Las, nine times, one over the limit.

“McCoy will now miss the first day of the Hennessy meeting as he is banned from November 20 to 24."

“I will have to get a part time-job somewhere – me and all the other jockeys that are being treated like this,” said a clearly dejected McCoy."

“The way things are going there are a lot of us who’ll be looking around for other ways of earning a living."

“The 37 year- old continued: ‘I’ve been riding horses for a long time and you tend to ride the way you always have done. I gave the horse only an extra flick and that was counted as a hit, but it was not a smack, it was merely a slap. CADDIE MASTER would have won this race six weeks ago (before the new rules came in ) and you have to feel disappointed for the owners and, I suppose, the sport because other people must be looking at this and wondering what’s gone wrong when you cannot get competitive.”

“When asked if he would consider an appeal, McCoy added: “Appeal? Who to? The same people who made the new rules up?

“ If Ruby Walsh could not get off for what he did at Aintree, what chance would I have?"

“For the likes of myself, Ruby and all the other jockeys who have been done it is going to be a long hard winter and you have to ask yourself is it worth it, the way things are?”

“Stewards secretary Simon Cowley said: ‘Tony McCoy hit his mount nine times in the home straight, which is one over the permitted level under the new guide-lines, and was therefore given a five-day suspension.”  END

ANDREW KING RACING POST COMMENT  “JUMP racing has never had a better ambassador than Tony McCoy and events at Ffos Las yesterday (Sunday November 6th 2011)  serve only to highlight the inadequacies and folly of the BHA whip rules.

“A sport who’s competitive edge is dissolved by rules that affect many to appease the few can be described only as in decline.

“If you penalise professionals for trying to win, those paying at the turnstiles and frequenting betting shops will leave in droves. McCoy said that six weeks ago the horse in question, CADDIE MASTER, would have won. Punters who backed the 4-1 favourite to notch his fourth consecutive win must have been left thinking exactly the same.

“We keep hearing that public perception is important as regards the whip. Now let’s see how that stands up outside the hallowed hallways of 75 High Holborn.

“Public perception did not stop many members of the bumper crowd at Ffos Las from asking Mc Coy for his autograph, something he was, as always, willing to accommodate despite the suspension.

“Public perception did not stop hundreds of thousands voting McCoy BBC Sports Personality Of The Year  11 months ago.”

“How many would have voted for, or asked for his autograph yesterday, if for one moment they considered he was guilty of abusing horses with a whip in a race?” END
