"DEAUVILLE: Sea the Stars colt sells for $1.4 million at yearling auction

"A colt from European champion Sea the Stars’s first crop got top billing Sunday when he sold for 1.2 million euros as the Deauville select yearling sale’s most expensive lot. The sale, conducted by Arqana, took place Saturday and Sunday nights in Deauville, France.

The Deauville auction’s two-night Part 1 ended with big gains in average and median, despite an opening night Saturday that saw median plummet by 21 percent.

Sunday’s final session sold 62 yearlings for about $12,975,270 for an average price of about $209,279 and a $172,200 median. Gross was down 18 percent, but average and median performed well compared with last year’s second session, advancing by 10 percent and 27 percent, respectively."

"A supremely bred colt by 2009 European Horse of the Year Sea the Stars out of Group 1 winner Alpine Rose set a new benchmark for highest price during Sunday's second session of the four-day Arqana Deauville August yearling sale.

"The gray colt was purchased for $1,479,196 (€1,200,000) by Mandore International Agency from the consignment of Ecurie des Monceaux. Alpine Rose won the 2009 Darley Prix Jean Romanet (Fr-G1) racing for Ecurie des Monceaux.

"Demi O'Byrne, agent for partners associated with Coolmore, purchased the next two highest prices of the session, both by late and legendary Coolmore sire Montjeu (Ire). A bay colt out of the Aldebaran mare Birmanie sold for $801,231 (€650,000). Birmanie is out of Grade 1 winner Belva, by Theatrical (Ire), and is a half sister to champion and promising Lane's End stallion English Channel and Grade 2 winner Sedgefield. O'Byrne also went to $640,984 (€520,000) for a gray Montjeu colt out of the Kendor mare Dibenoise. The colt is a full brother to Group 1 winners Corre Caminos and Recital and is a half brother to Group 2 winner Racinger."
