PREVIEW FLAT TURF JOCKEYS' CHAMPIONSHIP
 2014
LAST SATURDAY CHAMPION FLAT TURF JOCKEY (2013)  RICHARD HUGHES BROUGHT US THIS NEWS IN HIS RACING POST FEATURE ON PAGES 14-15.
TITLE RACE:
Richard say's: “I’ve got to the front and now I’m determined to stay there.
“FOR the first time this year I’ve been able to get my head in front in the jockeys’ championship race. I would now like to keep it there.
“It was funny to draw level with Ryan (Moore) in a match at Salisbury, Ryan’s mount Astrophysics was rated 105 and so not surprisingly went off a clear odds-on favourite. We had spoken on our way down to the start and Ryan told me he was going to make the running, which made sense – if you think you are on the best horse in a two - runner race you don’t want it to turn it into a farce.

“If Ryan had not gone on I would have done, but Elysian Flyer enjoyed getting a lead and I enjoyed slipstreaming Ryan inside the final furlong. As I said on the day, it was nice to beat the best jockey in the world in a two horse race.
“Now I want to beat him to the championship title , I know Ryan does not want to win it as much as I do, but that would reduce the pleasure I would take from once again defending my crown. One thing I will not be is complacent. Anything could still happen. Ryan is expecting to leave Britain relatively early and he should be off in less than three weeks’ time to ride Adelaide in the Cox Plate.
“However, what if for some reason that did not happen and he stayed here for longer than expected? I can’t take things easy now and then complain later in the month if it turns out Ryan is still in Britain firing in the winners.
“On top of that, I might well also be riding in America and Australia before the British season finishes. People do not seem to have taken on board there is a fair chance I, won’t be here for the duration of the campaign.
“I’m simply going to keep my head down and continue working hard. Now I’ve got to the front I need to stay there. “

Astonishing night was the most exotic chapter in a glorious career
Nicholas Godfrey recalls the spine-tingling impact of a true great ....
“ANYONE privileged to be present at the first Dubai World Cup in March 1996 will require no reminding about a truly spine-tingling experience. Sure, it was as lavish a race meeting as had ever been seen, but it would have meant nothing without the horses to turn Sheikh Mohammed dreams into reality …
