ROYAL ASCOT

SATURDAY OCTOBER 18 2014

VITAL INFO

"Going"

On how the going effects different racehorses.

Following heavy rainfall at Ascot this week the going has changed.

significantly.

Much care needs to be taken always to prevent serious injury to racehorses if they are left in to run when the state of the ground is wrong for them. If they can’t handle soft ground they cannot be run on soft ground end of story. A tricky predicament for owners and trainers sometimes placing your racehorse in danger of serious injury or death if you go ahead and run...

The Ascot racecards on Saturday will be made up of racehorses who like soft ground, and can act on soft ground. And that is how it should always be. Unfortunately people often find this hard to understand.

By Bruce Jackson
Post yesterday.
“As weather causes more big names to drop away, timing of Ascot’s showpiece finale comes under fire.

. Clive Brittain’s duel Group1 winner Rizeena does not take her chance now due to the softening ground. Clive defends both Ascot and the Champions Weekend saying: “I hope there is plenty of support through the turnstiles. The weather is always a guessing game – you can’t predict the weather that far in advance? It doesn’t mean if it doesn’t come off this year it should be the end of it. People are training horses for the backend of the season with the big money races as their goals. Newmarket is dipping its toe in the water on Friday (CH4 LIVE) with top class Group 1 races and I hope the crowds turn out both days in their thousands to support racing and make it successful. ”

COUNTDOWN NEWS FOR CHAMPIONS WEEKEND AT ROYAL ASCOT

Stuart Riley
“Spencer reunited with Maarek for sprint bid”

MAAREK will be reunited with Jamie Spencer  for the first time in 12 runs and more than a year when he attempts to win the Qipco Champions Sprint for the second time on Saturday. Spencer is two from three on Maarek, most prominently in this event two years ago but also when landing the Group 3 Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh in 2012. He last rode the son of Pivotal into ninth in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last year. ….. “The ground looks like being suitable for him at Ascot, at least in theory, although he has run well on better ground over five furlongs.

“But if it’s what I’d call English soft rather than very testing ground then it should be ideal for him.

“Richard Hannon can virtually close out the Champion Trainers’ title race in the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes if bookmakers have it right as he has favourite Night Of Thunder-the only -Classic winner of this season on show- and Toronado  in the top three in the betting, as well as last year’s champion-two-year-old Toormore for good measure.

“They face two new rivals with Custom Cut and Captain Cat both supplemented at a cost of  £70, 000 to push the race ‘s prize-money past £1 million.

“Despite concerns over the ground turning heavy, Hannon said yesterday “All three will run. Toronado should be OK on it, he won a Sussex with dig in the ground. Night Of Thunder will like it and Toormore has won on it as well.

“Freddy Head is looking to add another Group 1 to his family fortunes with Charm Spirit, the second favourite who beat Night Of Thunder in the Moulin last time.

“He said yesterday:  Charm Spirit is very well. I think he will like Ascot. He has improved a lot since he last came to England {for the Qipco, 2000 Guineas in May} The ground will not bother him-he will go on anything. “

Integral, winner of the Group 1 Sun Chariot  Stakes last month , is another contender , and her trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “She appeared to take that race very well , both in terms of weight loss and demeanour, but Group 1 races do leave their  scars, so we will know on Saturday if 14 days has been enough. “

“Kevin Ryan yesterday ruled out The Grey Gatsby, despite leaving the duel Group 1 winner in at the last forfeit stage, and Coral-Eclipse winner Mukhadram being retired.

“Ryan said: “He doesn’t run at Ascot. The ground is too soft for him-it’s heavy ground that has had 25mm of rain overnight. I don’t  think there is anything else for him this season, but he’ll stay in training next year. “
