GREAT ARC MEMORIES Post writers recall the sublime to the ridiculous.

Richard Birch brings us news of a new threat to London's last dog track p 93.
C4 Tanya (Punters Champion) Stevenson puts the Great back into Britain every day, Tanya loves her greyhounds, what will she make of this?

Jon Lees "  GREAT HEAVENS supplemented to Arc field.
"JOHN GOSDEN yesterday filled the void left in his Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe challenge through the loss of NATHANIEL by supplementing the colt's little sister GREAT HEAVENS, but he warned the Irish Oaks winner was not the big-race heavyweight her sibling is.
"After Eclipse winner NATHANIEL was one of three major players to be scratched  this week from Sunday's show piece, GREAT HEAVENS was one of a trio of new additions yesterday when put into the field at a cost of £100,000.

"The other additions were the Prix du Jockey Club winner SAONOIS and the Aga Khan's Secretariat Stakes winner BAYRIR.

"The additions meant that a total of 18 were declared. RELIABLE MAN, who heads to the Canadian International, was taken out.

" GREAT HEAVENS has not run since her Curragh victory in July and was been prepared for the Fillies' and Mares' Stakes on British Champions Day.

"However, the withdrawal of NATHANIEL, whose part- owner Lady Rothschild also owns the Irish Oaks heroine, prompted a rethink.

"Although DANEDREAM and SNOW FAIRY will be missing, rain at Longchamp was a key factor in committing a filly who has gained three of her four victories on soft or heavy going
a soft-ground filly 12-1 as rain falls on Longchamp.

"The trip and the ground will suit but she's never raced against colts before. She, has run against an older generation of fillies, but not colts. We were going in with a heavyweight;  we are now going in  with a three-year- old filly. It is a different ball game."

"Gosden said: "It's  been a difficult few days. We had planned the race for NATHANIEL all year. I came back from the sales in Ireland  and this filly worked nicely,
they have has considerable rain through the night and now they are saying it's very soft.

"The heavy overnight rain has very much played into the decision'

"The owners have made a very sporting decision given the disappointment that the horse they wanted  to run couldn't run.

"NATHANIEL is making a speedy recovery  from the temperature that put paid to his Qatar Prix de l'Arc  de Triomphe  challenge and could be in contention to meet FRANKEL at Ascot on British Champions Day. (20.10.12)

Spotlight on the Qatar Prix de
l'Arc de Triomphe

Longchamp racecourse has the honour of hosting the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Yves Saint-Martin, an outstanding jockey and four-time winner of the Arc, is full of praise for this event: "Being in the starting line-up for the Arc is a performance in itself. Winning the Arc is the greatest victory that a jockey could hope to achieve". This race not only attracts the largest number of betters, it also enjoys the most media coverage and is recognised to be the most prestigious flat race in the world. The victory by Workforce in 2010 was watched on television by over a billion people and by 50,000 spectators at Longchamp racecourse.
