Report: France, Sunday
Longchamp: Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Group 1) 1m4f, turf, 3yo+
IN an amazing finish, Japanese star Orfevre was grabbed on the line by longshot Solemia (Carlos Laffon-Parias/Olivier Peslier) in a shock result to the Qatar-sponsored Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Orfevre, heavily backed in the Pari-Mutuel on track, looked set to post a brilliant victory after storming to the lead on the wide outside in the straight, having been produced from the rear by a confident Christophe Soumillon.
Orfevre was going so easily he looked as if he was going to destroy his rivals but the four-year-old filly stayed on strongly as last year's Japanese Triple Crown winner seemed to hang fire a little.
Owned by the Wertheimers, the winner is a daughter of Poliglote sent off a 33-1 shot with British bookmakers. Orfevre was returned 5-1 with third-placed Masterstroke an 11-1 chance.
Great Heavens did best of the British and Irish visitors in sixth after racing prominently, one place ahead of dual-Derby winner Camelot.
