"Unrest leads to revolutionary act
Julian
Muscat examines the roots and ramifications of FRANKIE DETTORI'S decision to
ride CAMELOT in Sunday's big race ....
"PERHAPS
it was inevitable. Months of unrest at having his wings clipped finally rose to
the surface when FRANKIE DETTORI accepted the Arc ride on CAMELOT. A race that
was running out of storylines is now likely to contain some stunning
repercussions.
"This
is the same DETTORI who said he'd made "a mistake " when partnering SCORPION
to victory for the same CAMELOT connections in the 2005 St Leger. His public
lament drew a good- natured rebuke from John Magnier after he described
Coolmore as "the opposition".
"FRANKIE,
we love you and we forgive you, because you know not what you say,"
Magnier said in a rare speech at the Cartier Awards two months later.
"Does
DETTORI know what he is doing this time?
There can be no doubt. His expression of angst in the St Leger
postscript - after MICHAEL BARZALONA rode Godolphin's ENCKE into victory, with
DETTORI third aboard John Gosden's MICHELANGELO - told of a man near the end of
his tether.
"That
St Leger body- blow followed on from DETTORI watching as BARZALONA won the
Dubai World Cup on MONTEROSSO and then sitting out the Derby
and the Oaks, in which BARZALONA rode KAILANI for Godolphin. Whatever strife
his decision to ride CAMELOT will cause, he was not prepared to be benched for
a first Arc in 25 years.
"Many
will wonder who could blame him. With DETTORI now 'sharing' rides with
BARZALONA and SILVESTRE DE SOUSA, his equine arsenal has been significantly
reduced. Whatever has been agreed in the background, taking the CAMELOT ride
could provoke an employer who has not bought a yearling by any Coolmore sire
since 2005 - the year DETTORI won the St Leger aboard SCORPION.
"This
may be seen as the beginning of the end
of a relationship that has endured since Sheikh Mohammed recruited FRANKIE in
1994. The days of the lucrative retainer may soon be no more. And what of
JOSEPH O'BRIEN, who cannot make the 8st 11lb CAMELOT is due to carry?
"O'Brien's
days in a Flat saddle are surely limited. The teenager who could not walk
straight under a 6ft bridge is still probably growing
"With
JOSEPH not the long- term solution at Ballydoyle and DETTORI'S bridge with Godolphin burning, speculation is bound to twin the two protagonists. DETTORI has set rolling a ball that may take out some skittles before it comes to rest. In the Arc three years ago he was legged aboard the Shiekh's CAVALRYMAN by Andre Fabre. Much has changed: there was no place for DETTORI aboard Fabre's MASTERSTROKE this time round.
"DETTORI
could seal his fate were CAMELOT to deny MASTERSTROKE on Sunday, The most
striking thing is he appears to be contemplating that possibility with his eyes
wide open."

If there had been True Bloodhorse
Literate Stewards on duty at Doncaster that
day which there should have been, the St Leger would have gone to CAMELOT and
JOSEPH O'BRIEN on penalty points, second place to ENCKE and MICHAEL BARZALONA. CAMELOT and JOSEPH O'BRIEN did win the Triple
Crown and the St Leger that day because
by rights the early interference burdened upon CAMELOT should have given
CAMELOT and JOSEPH O'BRIEN penalty points of at least
twenty lengths in hand, due to
unacceptable obstruction caused over the first two furlongs of this
race. Obstruction that denied CAMELOT
and JOSEPH O'BRIEN the run of their true race.
Seriously dangerous interference
did take place over the first two furlong. Joseph said at
about the one furlong marker it was at its worst, caused by MAIN SEQUENCE partner
TED DURCAN (Team Lanagan). MAIN SEQUENCE
jumps from the starting gate very unsettled, the further he went the more
unsettled he became, until he got tired, this was not MAIN
SEQUENCE fault and neither was it TED DURKAN fault, It was most certainly not CAMELOT and JOSEPH O'BRIEN fault.
Whilst these unrequited manoeuvres were taking place CAMELOT
and JOSEPH O'BRIEN were the ones who got caught up in it, left to suffer the consequences costing them this race -
in the present order of things. There is always a reason for everything, the reason why MAIN SEQUENCE was so unsettled is because things are not right at home. MAIN SEQUENCE is a good horse, he needs a highly skilled true bloodhorse literate rider at home every day to quietly restore his confidence to take care of him.
LUCY BARRY WINS 'HANDS AND HEELS' APPRENTICE TRAINING SERIES
SEASON 2010-2011
"LUCY BARRY was streaks ahead of everybody else on the leader board prior to the final race on 22nd October at Doncaster (2011) and managed to secure the title without having a ride in the final race.
"LUCY is an apprentice for Clive Cox (Lambourn) started the series as she intended to perform throughout, winning the first 'Hands and Heels' race on Collect Art for trainer Andrew Haynes. Subsequently, Barry added three more wins to her name throughout the series, making her the only one of her piers to accumulate multiple victories during the competition. Despite being unable to collect her prize at Doncaster due to engagements at Newbury, Barry will undoubtedly be adding to her trophy collection very soon.
