Peter
Scargill " SHERWOOD FUMES AS APPEAL FAILS.
Trainer
fined over non-trier slams novice chase changes.
"OLIVER
SHERWOOD yesterday launched a stinging attack on the changes to the novice
chase system brought in by the BHA government on October 1 after losing his
appeal against the non-trier verdict dished out to him and jockey Leighton
Aspell at Hereford
last week.
"An
angry and distraught Sherwood said he was at 'the lowest of the low' and
repeating a comment he made on the day of the race, added he felt like
"packing it all in" after the
disciplinary panel upheld the local stewards' verdict over the running and
riding of FURROWS in a beginners' chase.
"Sherwood said the
case would be the first of many as a result of the BHA bringing in rules that
require novice chasers to contest at least one- weight-for -age- novice or
beginners' chase before running in a handicap chase.
"The trainer, who
estimated he has run more than 1,000 horses in novice or beginners' chases
before being accused of wrongdoing with FURROWS, said he and Aspell were
troubled by the BHA'S apparent desire to see a horse compete in, rather than
complete, a race.
"During evidence,
Sherwood's solicitor Rory Mac Neice said :" I find it an astonishing
admission for the BHA to make, that they put 'competing in' over 'completing' a
race. My clients are stunned."
"He added: What
really bugs me is the difference between 'competing' and 'completing' - that's
so wrong; that's horse welfare coming into play. I think this is a test case and that Mr Mac
Neice is going to be a lot busier."
"SHERWOOD and ASPELL
stunned as appeal fails.
""Sherwood's
£3,000 fine, Aspell's 14-day-ban - which the jockey said would "hit me
hard" - and the 40-day suspension imposed on FURROW, who is owned by former
BHA chief executive Nic Coward's father, all stand.
"Sherwood, who along
with Aspell as no plans to appeal, said: I might as well retire the horse
because he can't be ridden the way he needs to be. Ifeel like packing up, I
really do. I am at the lowest of the low. I've never been in this position in
28 years.
"They think they know
how to ride the horse better than Leighton
and how to train the horse better than me. How many times have they
ridden in races? They don't know."
"Sherwood added:
"It's a huge worry. On this issue, I have support from Paul Nicholls,
Nicky Henderson, Philip Hobbs, Alan King and Donald McCain.
"The National
Trainers Federation is going to have a meeting, I hope about this ruling,
because it's so wrong."
"In a brief summation
of the panel's findings, chair Hopper Cavendish said they felt that
"no discernible effort" had
been made by Aspell to obtain the best possible position, or to be seen to
obtain it, and that the run was "a confidence booster".
"The Racing Post
in-running commented for FURROWS, who finished fourth of seven, beaten 12
lengths, read: "Held up in rear, headway from three out. Never reached
leaders."
"Aspell said he had
taken a pull on the strong traveller between the third-and second-last to help
him see a stride, and that the horse finds little off the bridle.
"He said: "I'm
extremely disappointed. Fourteen days at any time of the year is tough, but
especially at this time of the year when we're at our busiest and Oliver's horses
are running so well. I'm a family man - this is going to hit me hard."
"Mac Neice said the
inflexibility of the BHA'S rules was
partly to blame for the appeal failing.
"He said: "The
rules don't allow any flexibility to take into account what you're seeing on
the film, Leighton had a decision to make coming down to the third-last: does
he send the horse after vastly superior horses and run the risk of not
obtaining the best possible placing, or ride the horse using his knowledge and
experience of the horse to get the best place?"
"Jamie Stier, BHA
director of raceday operations and regulations, said the regulator was pleased
with the changes made to the novice chase system.
"The issue of horses
being schooled in public has not been created by the trial, " he said.
"This is one isolated incident from around 80 races since the trial
commenced.
"Weight-for age
novice events are, and always have been, more vulnerable to this than other
races. For example, the previous two incidents of a trainer being charged with
schooling a horse in public were both in novice hurdles. The FURROWS incident in
no way represents a trend of horses being run in this manner in novice
chases."
"Also heard by the
disciplinary panel yesterday was the appeal by Daryl Jacob against a ten-day
suspension for dropping his hands at Wincanton last week. That was likewise
dismissed, and Jacob will also miss a large chunk of the festive period,
including the ride on Kauto Stone in the
William Hill King George V1 Chase.
"While accepting he
had mistaken the winning line for a path 40 yards from the finish and stopped
riding for three strides, Jacob said his horse, ULIS De VASSY, had lost no
momentum and would have finished no closer than second."
SUPPORTING SHERWOOD
Trainer Alan King says ....
"I feel very sorry for Oliver. After the new novice chase system came in
this was something that was waiting to happen.
"The horse was given
a nice, educational run. It might not have looked good but even if Leighton had
given him three or four smacks the result would not have been changed in any
way. We have been forced into this situation.
"A lot of a trainer's
job is about educating the horse and Oliver was trying to educate this horse.
Horses are not machines . We're producing a product and today is not always the
most important day."
J Margaret Clarke Turfcall Comment
HORSERACING can never be
about abusing the horses. Frightening the horses. Punishing the horses. Punishing
the people who care for the horses. Punishing the people who train the horses.
Fining Oliver Sherwood £3,000.00 for having achieved true bloodhorse literacy in his own right, at the
highest level. Leighton is a highly skilled true horseman right up there with
the very best worldwide, how dare these bloodhorse illiterate BHA people condemn
Oliver and Leighton so unjustly and get away with it. Making a public mockery of
two true decent horsemen's lives?
Jamie Stier, BHA director of
raceday operation and regulations, said the regulator was pleased with the
changes made to the novice chase system. The issues of horses being schooled in
public. What would Jamie Stier know about any of this? He is totally of the
bloodhorse literate radar along with all the incognito BHA cowards hiding
behind the name of yet another Australian.
Rory Mac Neice acting for
Oliver Sherwood said: "I find it an astonishing admission
for the BHA to make, that they put 'competing in' over 'completing' a race. My
clients are stunned. Mac Neicc went on to say the inflexibility of the BHA's rules was
partly to blame for the appeal failing.

DID YOU READ YESTERDAY'S RACING POST the extract from Clive Brittain's new
book The Smiling Pioneer. Robin Oakley?
"In this extract from Clive Brittain: Autobiography - The Smiling Pioneer, Robin Oakley examines the trainer's habit of producing big-priced winners -
plus the occasional runner-up.
"No finer example of prowess than Terimon's Derby second
1989

Lead Horse Terimon partner Tony (right) - Team Brittain Newmarket
Terimon (foaled 20 April 1986) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. His most successful year was 1991, when he won the International Stakes at York and was named European Champion Older Horse at the inaugural Cartier Racing Awards. He is best known, however, for his performance in the 1989 Derby in which he finished second at odds of 500/1, the longest ever recorded for a placed horse in the race.[1]
Clive Brittain: The Smiling Pioneer, by Robin Oakley is available to Racing Post readers at the special price of £15 (rrp £20)
JMC. With a truly great close up photograph of RAJEEM another big-priced winner 50-1 when landing the 2006 Falmouth Stakes, a success that 'branded' Clive Brittain's now trademark winner's enclosure jig. Clive's clickety click, click, click jig , right up there with Strictly Come Dancing standards.
In the complimentry photograph with this extract comes a close-up photograph of the filly RAJEEM showing the consentration and expression, and superfine understanding, in this fillies expression, she is fully aware of what she is being asked to do, if perhaps a little bit surprised about being asked to give just that little bit more as well, as doing her very best, but will this be too much .... RAJEEM'S expression shows struggling ..... to achieve ... trying ... but yes achieved.
The Falmouth Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to thoroughbredfillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run on the July Course at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July.

the two long reins out.
Jock has got to the stage of having both a saddle and a bridle on this yearling. The bit used on
this bridle has keys on it (a special mouthing bit) to help each yearling to fiddle with the keys he finds in his mouth, called 'mouthing a yearling' so as when a rider is introduced to the yearling, that yearling will already understand which way he is being asked to go on the bridle etc, to go faster or to steady down. A yearling will understand this fully before a rider is introduced.
